So it had to go out like a lion; that's the rule, right? But does that mean it has to keep going out like a lion almost a week into April? Oh, well... It will make for interesting speculation for our "When Will It Melt?" contest. We had 41 people place their guesses, ranging from April 22 to June 16. Keep an eye on our Facebook page, where we'll post periodic updates about the state of the snow pile.
As we look forward to spring arriving someday, we've been busy planning all kinds of things for the library. I'll hit the highlights below, and remember that you can always see the latest schedule of library events on our website. Hope we'll see you soon at the library!

Earth Day Celebration
The Mercer Public Library will host its annual Earth Day Fair at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. Join us for a free event sharing ways you can tread more lightly on the earth. There will be information and activities for all ages, recycling, and door prizes!
There are already over a dozen area organizations, businesses, and individuals signed up to participate. The Fair will also include Mercer Bird City activities and information, including a talk on Birding in the Northwoods with John Bates at the conclusion of the fair at noon. Free recycling will be available for small electronics, plastic bags and film, batteries, denim, and more, and you can grab lunch or a snack with the Mercer Leos. If you or your organization would like to be an exhibitor at the Fair, please call the library at 715-476-2366. There's no cost to participate.

Conservation Through Land Trusts with board members of the Northwoods Land Trust on Monday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m.

Scandinavian Loop Weaving Class with Deb Patton on Tuesday, April 18. Note: Registration for this event is full, but we are taking names for a waitlist for a future class, if there is interest. Give us a call!

Rock Painting Contest: Every year we host an art contest associated with our Earth Day Fair, and this year it's a rock painting contest for all ages, including adults! Check out the guidelines on our website.

Landscaping with Native Plants
Darrin Kimbler, UW-Madison Extension Iron County Agriculture Educator kicked off a four-part series on landscaping with native plants last week. Programs are scheduled every Friday from March 31 to April 21, alternating between our library and the Hurley Library. All are welcome to attend these sessions in person, or click the links below to register to watch the classes live on Zoom.

Wondering what to do with those old films, VHS tapes, photos, slides, and other outdated formats you have lying around? Library assistant Blaze Burton will introduce you to the equipment and software available for you to digitally preserve those precious memories.

Saturday, April 29 at 10:30 a.m. - Internet Safety with Bug Tussel University: Learn how to stay safe while using the internet with password management, social media privacy, and more.

Salamanders: a free Discovery Center program
Mark your calendar for Wednesday, May 3 at 12:00 p.m. -- Let’s look under some logs and find out about the different species of salamanders that call Wisconsin home! Join North Lakeland Discovery Center Naturalist Hannah Gargrave and her two pet tiger salamanders in learning about these neat amphibians, their adaptations, and the habitats in which they live. This program is part of the Discovery Center’s Knowledge at Noon series, which brings naturalists to public libraries around the Center’s service area. All are welcome.

Digital Spotlight: CreativeBug
Feeling crafty? Want to build your skills as an artist or maker? CreativeBug has thousands of ad-free craft video classes taught by experts and artists, and it's one of the latest additions to the collection of digital services available with your library card.
Recent additions to the CreativeBug library include video instructions for crocheted amigurumi, embroidery, jewelry-making with polymer clay, upcycled t-shirt yarn, and much more. You can learn to use your Cricut or Glowforge with video lessons and projects, too. I'm working my way through a workshop to learn to use Procreate on my iPad.
