New Rochelle High School is new to ninth-grader Bosko Radonjich because he and his family just moved here from Serbia. For senior Bryce Boahene, New Rochelle High School is new because he transferred here from Archbishop Stepanic High School in White Plains.

For others, the high school is quite familiar. Gisele Moncada hadn’t been in the building since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020. But she is glad she knows her way around, and is excited about her senior year.
Monday marked the start of a new routine for everyone in the New Rochelle High School community: the first day of in-person classes this school year. The school building’s scheduled opening in September was delayed while extensive repairs were made after flooding caused by Hurricane Ida. Orientation was held on Friday for freshmen, sophomores, and students new to the high school, but today was a big day, too.

Instead of 3,300 students learning remotely Monday, classrooms, such as the biology class in the photo, were brimming with activity. Hallways were busy. And it felt good.

“It’s really exciting, it is!” said Principal Dr. Dagoberto Artiles, noting the day went smoothly. “I’ve been all around visiting classrooms. Everyone’s learning. It’s hectic and exciting – a beautiful environment!”

Vocal music teacher David Jutt, who has been at the school for 20 years, particularly noted the dynamic of new vs. familiar. “We’re two months into the year, but it’s the first day,” he said. “In a way, I know the kids, but I’m getting to meet them for the first time.”
Assistant Principal Rachel Cornelius walked the halls Monday morning, on the lookout to be helpful. She sensed when students were looking for a particular classroom, and gave them directions. She became a tour guide when three young ladies needed navigation to another section of the school. And she greeted familiar students, including Bryce Boahene, who was enjoying fresh air on the athletic field between classes.

“I like the environment,” Boahene, a linebacker on the Huguenot football team who exchanged big smiles with Cornelius. “It’s been very welcoming and friendly. I’m feeling the love walking around!”

"Me gusta el medio ambiente", dijo Boahene, un apoyador del equipo de fútbol hugonote que intercambió grandes sonrisas con Cornelius. “Ha sido muy acogedor y amigable. ¡Siento el amor caminando!"
