Hey TAPA Ensemble -
I hope you all are doing well! As we move closer to summer, this newsletter will likely shift away from After-School programming and into Summer opportunities - camps, jobs, workshops, etc.
In the meantime, I’m also excited to announce a NEW Section on Student Organizing and Activism that I am hopeful we’ll see some of our amazing students get involved.
As always, the goal is to get an updated list of opportunities out every 2 weeks. We’ll start with any things you need to sign up for quickly so you don’t miss your spot.
And we’ll still include more laid back programs that you can join any time.

Part 1 - NEW Section on Student Organizing and Activism
What: Providence Student Union
Who: Open to all High School students in Providence
When: Meetings are held on different days and times depending on what you are interested in - always after-school
Where: You can learn more by getting in touch with them HERE
Why: Providence Student Union builds student power to improve our education and well-being. We envision a true “union for students” that increases young people’s collective power and ensures our frustrations, demands, and dreams are heard. At PSU, young people grow as leaders, organizers, and advocates for justice in all forms, today and throughout their lives.
What: Youth In Action
Who: Open to all Providence Students - based on the application below
When: Applications are due in June and programming begins next school year
Where: You can apply to join their programming HERE
Why: “We create opportunities for youth to become agents of change through transformative youth leadership programming. We create brave spaces for youth to bring their cultures, values, identities, and truths and then build the skills and tools to name and address equity issues in their communities. Through their leadership, Youth In Action works to create more caring and fair public institutions and systems.”
What: Providence Youth Student Movement
Who: Open to all students with a focus on organizing with those who identify as Southeast Asian
When: Meetings are held at different days and times depending on what you are interested in
Where: You can learn more about PRYSM HERE
Why: “PrYSM organizes at the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation by centering youth, female, queer, and people of color leadership in our campaigns, our organization, and our communities. PrYSM mobilizes queer Southeast Asian youth, families, and allies to build grassroots power and organize collectively for social justice.”
Part 2 - Summer Programming to Sign Up For
What: DownCity Design Summer Design Studios
When: July 7 – August 13, 2021 :: Mon - Fri , 9:30 am - 2:30 pm
Where: Online and at DownCity Design Studio and Providence Career & Technical Academy (PCTA)
Why: Participants get to work with real-world clients, such as non-profit organizations or municipal agencies, who present our young designers with authentic challenges that can be addressed through design. Participants work collaboratively to investigate and better understand their client’s challenge, propose and test potential solutions to share with the client for feedback, and finally fabricate new structures for public spaces and new processes, graphics or experiences.
Part 3 - Join any time
What: Mindful Makers at Youth Pride
Who: Open to all students
When: Fridays from 3-4 on Zoom
Why: Bring whatever you would like to create and work on it with other youth n a quiet Zoom call where we will work on mindfulness and experience the healing power of making art together

What: TAPA Electronics
When: Fridays After-School (3:30 to 4:30)
Why: In this Club, you'll get to build and design electronics, mixing art with engineering and building. If you are interested in technology, this is a place for you to be. Hit up Mr. Lopez or join the link Friday after school.
What: Creative Writing Studio
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays After-School (3:30 to 4:30)
Why: In Creative Writing, we work on writing our own poems, songs, and stories. If you sing, rap, tell stories, or just like writing, you should come hang out with us. We give each other feedback to improve our work but also show each other a lot of love. Hope to see you there!
What: Empowerment Group for Students who Identify as Female
When: Tuesdays After-School (3:30 to 4:30)
Why: The Empowerment Group for students who Identify as Female is a chance to connect with other young female-identifying students at the school and discuss what’s going on in the school and in the world. It is a great way to share space and support each other throughout the year.
What: Study Group
When: Wednesdays After-School (3:30 to 4:30)
Why: This group is a chance to unwind at the end of the day, talk through how things went, and get some work done together if you want to. It’s low pressure and the first goal is keep our stress levels low by supporting one another.
What: Teen Learning Lounge
When: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 3-5pm
Where: Providence Public Library (online)
Why: Teen Learning Lounge is a low-key space to stop by if you are looking for help with anything for school or looking for a job. They can help you with resumes, interview prep, writing, research and more.
What: Paper Arts Social
Who: RISD Teen Programs
When: Fridays from 3-5pm
Where: Zoom link here :: Meeting ID: 956 5575 7128 :: Passcode: 333377
Why: These are really casual sessions where we try out different ideas and prompts with lots of room for individual exploration. All folks need to participate is paper and something to draw with, but they could also get more elaborate and bring paint or collage materials or even an ipad if they are into digital art. It is mostly just a nice way to relax at the end of the week and make art with other folks around than a formal class.
What: Additional Programming at New Urban Arts
Who: Open to all High School students
When: Different programs are offered each day - check out the calendar below to see what they have this month
Where: Fill out THIS FORM to get in touch with NUA and let them know you’re interested
Why: NUA has programs in cooking, music, sewing, design - pretty much any art form you can think of. They also offer “virtual studio” if you just want to hang out with some other artists after school.

¡Espero que todos estén bien! A medida que nos acerquemos al verano, el enfoque de este boletín serán las oportunidades de verano: campamentos, trabajos, talleres, etc.
Mientras tanto, también me complace anunciar una NUEVA sección sobre organización y activismo estudiantil en la que espero ver a algunos de nuestros increíbles estudiantes participar.
Como siempre, el objetivo es obtener una lista actualizada de oportunidades cada 2 semanas. Comenzaremos con cualquier programa al que deben registrarse rápidamente para asegurar su cupo y no perder la oportunidad.
También incluiremos programas con más flexibilidad de inscripción, a los que pueden unirse en cualquier momento.

Parte 1 - NUEVA Sección Sobre Organización y Activismo Estudiantil
Qué: Providence Student Union
Quién: Abierto a Todos los Estudiantes de Secundaria en el Área de Providence
Cuándo: Las reuniones se llevan a cabo en diferentes días y horarios dependiendo de lo que te interese - siempre después de la escuela.

Por Qué: Providence Student Union fomenta el poder de los estudiantes para mejorar nuestra educación y bienestar. Visualizamos una verdadera "unión de estudiantes" que aumenta el poder colectivo de los jóvenes y asegura que nuestras frustraciones, demandas y sueños sean escuchados. En PSU, los jóvenes crecen como líderes, organizadores y defensores de la justicia en todas sus formas, hoy y a lo largo de sus vidas.

Por Qué: “PrYSM se organiza en las intersecciones de raza, clase, género y orientación sexual al centrar el liderazgo de jóvenes, mujeres, queer y personas de color en nuestras campañas, nuestra organización y nuestras comunidades. PrYSM moviliza a los jóvenes, familias y aliados queer del Sudeste Asiático para construir el poder fundamental y organizarse colectivamente por la justicia social”.
Part 2 - Programación de Verano con Inscripción Abierta
Qué: DownCity Design Summer Design Studios

Quíen: 7 de Julio – 13 de Agosto, 2021 :: Lun - Vier , 9:30 am - 2:30 pm
Cuándo: En línea y en el DownCity Design Studio y Providence Career & Technical Academy (PCTA)
Por Qué: Los participantes trabajan con clientes del mundo real, como organizaciones sin fines de lucro o agencias municipales, que presentan a nuestros jóvenes diseñadores los retos auténticos que se pueden abordar a través del diseño. Los participantes trabajan en colaboración para investigar y comprender mejor la dificultad de su cliente, proponer y probar posibles soluciones para compartir con el cliente para obtener comentarios y, finalmente, fabricar nuevas estructuras para espacios públicos y nuevos procesos, gráficos o experiencias.
Parte 3 - Unete en cualquier momento
Qué: Mindful Makers at Youth Pride
Quíen: Abierto a todo estudiante
Cuándo: Viernes de 3-4 por Zoom
Por Qué: Trae lo que te gustaría crear y trabaja en ello con otros jóvenes en una silenciosa sesión de Zoom donde trabajaremos en concientización y experimentaremos el poder curativo de hacer arte juntos.

Qué: TAPA Electrónica
Cuándo: Viernes después de escuela (3:30 to 4:30)
Por Qué: En este Club, podrás construir y diseñar electrónica, mezclando arte con ingeniería y construcción. Si estás interesado en la tecnología, este es un lugar para tí. Comunícate con Mr. López o utiliza el enlace para ingresar a la sesion del Viernes.
Qué: Taller de Escritura Creativa
Cuándo: Martes y Jueves después de escuela (3:30 to 4:30)
Por Qué: En Escritura Creativa, trabajamos en escribir nuestros propios poemas, canciones e historias. Si cantas, rapeas, cuentas historias o simplemente te gusta escribir, deberías venir a pasar el rato con nosotros. Compartimos nuestra opinion y nos ayudamos mutuamente para mejorar nuestro trabajo, pero también nos mostramos mucho amor. ¡Espero verte allí!
Qué: Grupo de Empoderamiento para Estudiantes Identificando como Mujer
Cuándo: Martes después de escuela (3:30 to 4:30)
Por Qué: El Grupo de Empoderamiento para Estudiantes Identificanco como Mujer es una oportunidad para conectarte con otras estudiantes jóvenes que se identifican como mujeres en la escuela y discutir lo que está sucediendo en la escuela y en el mundo. Es una excelente manera de compartir espacio y apoyarse mutuamente durante todo el año.
Qué: Grupo de Estudio
Cuándo: Miércoles después de escuela (3:30 to 4:30)
Por Qué: Este grupo es una oportunidad para relajarte al final del día, hablar sobre cómo fueron las cosas y trabajar juntos si lo deseas. Es un tiempo tranquilo y el primer objetivo es mantener bajos nuestros niveles de estrés apoyándonos unos a otros.
Qué: Salón de Aprendizaje para Jóvenes
Cuándo: Lunes, Miércoles, y Jueves 3-5pm
Dónde: Providence Public Library (en línea)
Por Qué: El Salón de Aprendizaje es un espacio discreto para visitar si estás buscando ayuda con algo para la escuela o buscando trabajo. Pueden ayudarte con currículums, preparación de entrevistas, redacción, investigación y más.
Qué: Artes de Papel Social
Quién: RISD Teen Programs
Cuándo: Viernes 3-5pm

Por Qué: Estas son sesiones realmente informales en las que probamos diferentes ideas e indicaciones con mucho espacio para la exploración individual. Todo lo que las personas necesitan para participar es papel y algo para dibujar, pero también podrían ser más elaborados y traer materiales de pintura o collage o incluso un ipad si les gusta el arte digital. En su mayoría, es solo una buena manera de relajarse al final de la semana y hacer arte con otras personas en un ambiente informal.
Qué: Programación Adicional en New Urban Arts
Quién: Abierto a estudiantes de Secundaria solamente
Cuándo: Se ofrecen diferentes programas cada día; consulta el calendario a continuación para ver qué tienen este mes
Dónde: Completa ESTE FORMULARIO para comunicarte con NUA y dejarles saber que estás interesado.
Por Qué: NUA tiene programas de cocina, música, costura, diseño, prácticamente cualquier forma de arte que puedas imaginar. También ofrecen "estudio virtual" si solo quieres pasar el rato con otros artistas después de la escuela.
