Inclusive Language across Latin America

CLAS, in collaboration with Union Institute & University's Institute for Social Justice, presents a new series of conversations about inclusive language. This free series will take place on Zoom and consist of 3 panels (all times EDT):

• Oct. 13, 2-4pm: Spanish
• Nov. 2, 4-6pm: Portuguese
• Nov. 15, 4-6pm: Indigenous Languages (Nahuatl, Quechua, Yucatec Maya

The series will offer a panorama of inclusive language in these languages in terms of its linguistic manifestation, adoption by speakers, relationship to gender roles and cultural norms, connection to social movements and human rights, etc. Each conversation will be led by a diverse team of panelists with unique expertise and perspectives who will educate and challenge us on these topics.

Latina/o/x Oral Histories Workshop

Drs. Elena Foulis (OSU) and Juan Coronado (Central Connecticut State) are offering a free workshop entitled Historias: Conducting Oral Histories with Latina/o/x Communities, to be held Fri, Nov. 12 (4-8pm) and Sat, Nov. 13 (9am-3pm).

This workshop, sponsored by CLAS in partnership with the Martín de Porres Center, will train participants in planning and conducting oral history projects. Participants will get an opportunity for hands-on experience, and discussion topics will include ethics, understanding the complexity of Latina/o/x communities, interviewing techniques in English and Spanish, transcribing, archiving, and more.

Space is limited to 35 participants, so register early! The event will take place in-person at the Martín de Porres Center. Email Dr. Elena Foulis (foulis.5@osu.edu) with questions.

Byrd Center Symposium on Climate Change

The third annual Byrd Center Symposium on Climate Change Research at OSU will take place October 8th and will feature talks and a discussion panel on the nexus between climate, water and health.

Digital Humanities in Latin America Lecture

On Friday, September 24th, 2:20-3:40 p.m., Drs. Adriana Picoral and Tony Berber Sardinha will give a lecture entitled "The current state of and future challenges of digital humanities in Latin America."

This event, co-sponsored by CLAS and the Dept. of Spanish & Portuguese, is free and open to the public and will be presented via Zoom. Register here to receive the link.

Andrew Gantt & Micah Unzueta

Under the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies program, CLAS offers summer and academic year fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students who need advanced training in language and area studies.
The next application window for FLAS fellowships will open in early November '21, with a February '22 deadline. Stay tuned!

Stipend for meritorious Dominican student

The Dominican-American Midwest Association (DAMA) presents the Dr. Ramón García Educational Award, which carries a $1,000 stipend. It is given annually to a meritorious student of Dominican descent who is pursuing or plans to pursue post-secondary education. The application deadline is September 30, 2021.
