Emmanuel’s Annual Congregational meeting happens every year on the last Sunday in January, just weeks away on January 30. We will have a single worship service at 10:00am followed by the annual meeting at 11:00am. The worship service will be a celebration of our five-year anniversary as a Reconciling in Christ Congregation. Join us as we mark the day using the 2022 theme “Made in God's Image: God's Boundless Diversity”.

The church council is meeting next Tuesday, January 18 (one week delayed to allow the nominating team to complete its work) via Zoom at 6:30pm, due to the spike in Covid-19 Omicron variant cases. The following are on the agenda:

  • the 2022 budget,
  • the Church in a Changing World Survey results,
  • the nominating committee recommendations for the January 30 annual meeting
  • and discussion of Chapters 8 and 9 of Michael Ward’s book, Abundance.

If you would like to attend the Zoom meeting, contact the church office to be emailed the information.

Bible Study and Group News

sepia_stacked_hands.jpg

Pr. Adam Bissell offers a monthly Caregiver Support Group, meeting the first Thursday of the month at 11:00am in the nursery. Pr. Adam is offering a Zoom alternative, in case it is difficult to get to the church. Call the church office to receive a Zoom invite via email.

Pr. Adam’s Grief Group meets on the second and fourth Friday of the month in the Nursery at 1:00pm. This group is for those who have experienced loss. The next meeting is today, Friday, January 14 at 1:00pm.

The Tuesday Morning 10am Women’s Bible Study is reading Rachel Held Evan’s book, Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again. Rachel created a study guide for this book, so we have some extra help!

The book is available through Amazon, Kindle and Audible, and I am sure though the public library. Our group will continue to offer the hybrid meeting option, either in person in the Fellowship Hall or on Zoom. Contact Pr. Tricia for a zoom invitation.

The Wednesday 10am Lectionary Study group led by Hal Vogelaar and Larry Gordon meets in the Fellowship Hall. Masks are recommended except when you are drinking or eating.

Jim Rebholz leads a Thursday evening Bible Study at their home. They meet at 6:30pm for dessert (Carole makes the BEST desserts) and the study starts at 7:00pm. Contact Jim for the address and more information at 925-989-7186.

Looking for other Bible Study alternatives? The Fellowship Team found that Bible studies were a top priority for folks; when you sign up, Jim Rebholz will help to match you with a group.

Another idea that came out of the Fellowship Ministry Team meeting was dinner in member’s homes. Would you like to get to know your fellow church members a little better? Have a good conversation; maybe over a meal? Good news, it’s going to happen!

Dinners for Eight

The plan is that once a month, eight people will meet at a member’s home for dinner.

The host will provide the main course, while the other guests fill in with appetizers, side dishes or dessert. If you still are available to participate the next month, you will dine with a different group so that you get to know more of your fellow worshippers. You will have received an email or a USPS mailing with information about how to sign up.

If you want to know more, talk to Nancy and Joel Smith, Jim and Carole Rebholz or Mike and Marsha Beno. The January meal has been planned, if you want to be part of February, contact Nancy Smith.

Preschool Potential

Pastor Adam Bissell is looking for a few folks who would be interested in exploring the possibility of starting a preschool at Emmanuel. If you have some ideas or experience, please contact Pr. Adam at adamwbissell@yahoo.com.

Envelopes

There are still a lot of giving envelopes in the boxes in the narthex waiting to be picked up. It costs $3 to mail them so please grab yours and begin using it now, and while you are at it, check your mailbox too! If you see a neighbor’s or friends that has been picked up, take it to them to save the postage.

We would love to hear about your adventures; share a picture and a story and we will put it in our Friday Newsletter! Email your submissions to Kimberly at ELCPVnews@gmail.com (or click on the email link, or simply reply to this email!) by Wednesday afternoon to be included in the Friday email.

Start saving your change, Souper Bowl Sunday is coming!

The youth of Emmanuel will be in the Narthex after each worship service on February 13, banging pots to catch your attention. The funds collected will be sent to Lutheran World Hunger.

We won’t be including blood drive information in the newsletter for the time being as we have scheduled a Vitalant Blood Drive for Friday, March 4 at Emmanuel! Sign up will begin soon.

Emmanuel

you did it again!

You adopted three families from Mountain View School and provided gifts for five adults and seven children. The quilting group provided three quilts, one for each family. Then Thrivent paid for a turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

A single mother with three children was in tears. Another family affected by COVID was so grateful. The third family, living in a small house with two children, was very appreciative. All the families were amazed by the beautifully wrapped gifts and the food boxes. Thank you for caring, Emmanuel!

Here is Taryn Harbridge on violin playing “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”. Lovely music and photography; take a few minutes to breathe in the glory of God!

When Tim and I moved to Arizona, we had to leave behind a six-foot-tall giraffe that lived in our front yard garden (the buyers included it in the sales agreement). My Christmas gift from my sons this year was a replacement. I have named her Lucy and she is now grazing on the Russian sage in our front yard!

Planning for the Resilience of Our Towns, Environment, Climate and Tourism

Protect.png

In the last three articles we have given you information and updates on the PROTECT Campaign. In this article, we will focus entirely on the PROTECT Campaign as it is extremely important for the Quad cities area.

As stated in our previous articles, this is an effort by a local grassroots group to secure public and political support for the implementation of a climate risk assessment or profile for our Quad Cities. It has the following mission and purpose:

  • Mission: To protect the Prescott region from the devastating climate impacts now facing our communities.
  • Purpose: To secure public and political support for the implementation of a climate impact risk assessment/study, similar to the 2020 Climate Profile, produced for Sedona and the Verde Valley.

How will a climate risk assessment help our Quad Cities region?  A climate risk assessment

  • will identify and accurately describe how vulnerable an area is to which climate impacts.
  • determines the scope of impacts to be addressed and the amount of risk for those identified impacts.
  • is the baseline data and the framework necessary to develop a climate action plan, so communities correctly identify what needs to be in place to build resiliency, mitigate impacts and adapt with appropriate local actions/solutions to the reality of climate impacts.
  • is the tool to ensure that an effective plan is in place to protect the residents of an area from increasing hotter temperatures, wildfires, drought, flooding/after fire, loss of life and property, loss of forest and wildlife, and impacts on our local economies.

Click here to view the Climate Risk Assessment study completed by Sedona and the Verde Valley in 2019.

The PROTECT campaign is using speakers at the various city council meetings, letters to the editor in local newspapers and tabling to promote and disseminate information on the campaign. Tabling is a term for literally setting up a table at an event or a high-traffic location to engage people in discussion and pass out materials. We will be having a tabling event at our church next Sunday morning, January 23, 2022.

PROTECT Campaign

Climate impacts adversely affect communities worldwide, but some regions are particularly vulnerable. The Southwest is experiencing hotter temperatures, wildfires, water shortages, drought, and flooding events with consequences to human and environmental health and well-being. The PROTECT campaign is a grassroots, local movement to bring the Prescott quad-cities area together with other municipalities in Yavapai County in an effort of mitigation and adaptation.
