Foundation newsletter mast head_beige_gray
This fall, we have been delighted to meet with students again on Howard Community College's campus as we have successfully transitioned back to full on-campus operations. In a year that has continued to bring changes due to the global pandemic, we are proud to be a part of this resilient and compassionate community.

In October, we bid farewell to Dr. Kate Hetherington, president, and celebrated her retirement after 14 years at the helm of HCC and 22 years at the institution. Lynn Coleman is currently serving as HCC's interim president, and we look forward to hearing who will be named as HCC's 5th president as we continue to support the success of HCC students.

This issue of the HCC Educational Foundation newsletter recognizes the exciting ways donors make a lasting impact on students at HCC – from sponsoring a campus food pantry or a named space to raising a glass at Vino Scholastico to partnering on a sensational new Rep Stage production and more. Thanks to you, our students are adapting and thriving while achieving success in their education.

Enjoy!

Leaving a Legacy of Leadership: HCC President Kate Hetherington Retires

Dr. Kate Hetherington retired from HCC on October 1, 2021, leaving a legacy that illustrates how "you can get there from here" can apply to college presidents, too. For Dr. Hetherington, "there" means the fulfillment of a goal to leave after HCC completed its most recent Middle States reaccreditation process and celebrated its 50th anniversary. Under her leadership, HCC has grown significantly in its student population, campus facilities, academic innovation, and successes, earning numerous awards along the way. Read more about her impressive tenure at HCC and her lifelong commitment to improving community college education.

HCC unveiled the Vivian C. "Millie" and William Harrison Bailey Food Pantry on campus earlier this fall. This pantry is dedicated to Mrs. Bailey, a longtime supporter of the college's food security initiatives. The food pantry is part of the Fueling Dragons program, a series of programs designed to increase students' knowledge about nutrition, support students in making healthy choices, and provide access to food with pantry items, recipes, meal kits, and workshops Learn more about Fueling Dragons.
Named Spaces at HCC

HCC recently renamed its cafeteria the Ecker Café on the Quad in memory of Dr. Charles I. Ecker, an icon for education in Maryland and Howard County executive from 1990-1998. Naming opportunities allow anyone to leave a lasting legacy on HCC’s campus, and most importantly, make a significant impact on students. From placing an engraved brick on campus to naming a building, your contribution towards a naming opportunity will be seen by thousands of students, staff, faculty, and community members who pass through HCC’s campus each week.
Raising a Glass and Raising a Scholarship at Vino Scholastico

Vino Scholastico returned this year for an in-person celebration, with M&T Bank again serving as the presenting sponsor. For safety during the ongoing pandemic, the HCC Educational Foundation hosted this event outdoors, transforming the third floor of the HCC East Garage into a "deck" party on August 27. This event featured tastings of fine wines, spirits, and craft beers, as well as delicious offerings from area restaurants and caterers. As a result, the foundation raised more than $129,000 for student scholarships! Learn more about the event,

A Night at the Theatre for a Worthy Cause

"Sunrize 'With a Z' Off-Off…OFF Broadway," a loving satire of contemporary musical theatre divas, is coming to HCC's Rep Stage from November 19–21, 2021. Created and performed by Joseph W. Ritsch, "Sunrize 'With a Z' Off-Off...OFF Broadway" is a benevolent tribute to the musical theatre artists he adored as a child, as well as a creative endeavor to combine his work as a drag artist and musical theatre performer. The show is produced in partnership with the HCC Educational Foundation, and a percentage of all ticket sales will go towards funding meal kits distributed through the campus food pantry. A limited number of front row VIP cabaret tables will be available (seating two per table) for $100—with 100% of those proceeds going directly to the pantry. Reserve your tickets today!
