Livestock News

Livestock Fair Participation Agreement

At the August Council meeting, the Butte County 4-H Livestock Fair Participation Requirements and Agreement has been revised to align with California 4-H Policy.

It can be accessed online https://ucanr.edu/sites/Butte/files/372188.pdf.

Silver Dollar Fair

YQCA is a State and Fair requirement, not a 4-H requirement. Youth must have it completed prior to entering. This will be checked by the fair office staff.

The YQCA certificate needs to be emailed to livestock@silverdollarfair.org and include in the email your club or chapter name and species prior to entering. Please see the letter below for more information.

Silver Dollar Jr. Livestock Department Schedule

Livestock Office Phone: (530)895-4666 or Email: livestock@silverdollarfair.org

All updates can be located on the website (www.silverdollarfair.org) along with local and state rules.

**YQCA must be completed prior to entering! Certificate must be valid thru May 28, 2023, for the Silver Dollar Fair. **

If you were in 4-H this past year, you must have completed and turn in your Record Books to your CCL for evaluation (all signatures required) no later than November 30th! If this was not done, you will not be qualified to show and sell an animal at the 2023 fairs.

Livestock members must have been enrolled in 4-H no later than October 20th to be eligible to show and sell at the Silver Dollar Fair.

4-H Policy Reminder: Animal Ownership & Supervision Requirements

For 4-H members who are enrolled or plan to enroll in a 4-H animal project and who wish to show or exhibit their animal project(s) at a fair, exposition, sponsored shows, e.g., 4-H shows or other sponsored shows, now is a good time to review the timeframes of animal ownership and supervision members will need to meet for eligibility. Each category is outlined below. Sharing these timeframes with members will help ensure that youth in animals projects will be prepared for the 4-H year and fair season each year. See Ch. 7 of the policy handbook, IV. Fairs, Expositions, and Other sponsored Shows for more information.

·    Poultry – must be owned and supervised for not less than 30 consecutive days and be enrolled in the project for not less than 60 consecutive days.

·    Rabbits – must be owned and supervised for not less than 30 consecutive days and be enrolled in the project for not less than 60 consecutive days.

·    Feeder and breeding animals – must be owned and supervised for not less than 30 consecutive days and be enrolled in the project for not less than 60 consecutive days.

·    Market sheep, swine, veal and goats – must be owned and supervised for not less than 60 consecutive days.

·    Market beef – must be owned and supervised for not less than 120 consecutive days.

·    Horses – must be owned/leased and supervised for not less than 120 consecutive days. Male foals may be shown by 4-H members, but yearling and older stallions are ineligible as 4-H projects. The age of the horse shall be computed on the basis of a calendar year starting on January 1 of the year foaled; it is a weanling during the calendar year in which foaled, and a yearling during the first calendar year following its foaling date, regardless of year foaled.

·    Llamas & Alpacas - must be owned/leased and supervised for not less than 120 consecutive days.

Butte County Fair

A couple of changes to the entry process this coming year. ALL entries open on January 3rd. That includes ALL breeding and ALL market species.

Closing dates will be as followed:

Steers: April 24, 2023

Hogs, Lambs, & Goats: June 23, 2023

Breeding, Rabbits, & Poultry (including turkeys): July 24, 2023

****UNLESS THAT SPECIE(s) FILLS BEFORE THE DATE****

In the case that the entry fills we will have a waitlist system in place. I will keep in touch if that becomes an issue.

For clarification of the rules. If you've entered a market steer nomination and decide to enter another species and pay for said species, we will remove your steer entry, allowing waitlist exhibitors to be moved up. NO exhibitor will have more than one paid entry on file with the fair. You are ALLOWED to have backup animals of the same species.

Local and species-specific rules should be published by Feb 1.

All entries will be processed through ShoWorks software starting with the upcoming 2023 Fair. Through this software exhibitors will be able to log into a previously made account if they have created one for other fairs (ex. Silver Dollar, State Fair). If they are new to the ShoWorks system, they will need to create an account that they can use for future years. No more account set up each year. Please see the image below for a walk through of the process.

Please contact Hope West at the Butte County Fair Livestock office for any questions 530-846-3626.

Butte County Fair Update:

Just wanted to reach out to all and remind you- SHOWORKS IS TO TURN IN PICTURES OF YOUR LIVESTOCK.

LIABILITY FORMS AND YQCA NEED TO BE TURNED INTO THE GOOGLE FORM.

I will discard emails that have livestock pictures, bills of sale, YQCA, and liability forms.

I appreciate those who have turned in their documents in the appropriate fields, I understand this is new, but soon this will become routine. I am not expecting you to have your livestock pictures and bills of sale in, however, I am expecting them to be turned into ShoWorks when you have the livestock before the following dates:

Steers: April 24, 2023

Pigs, Lambs, and Goats: June 23, 2023

Rabbits and Chickens: July 24, 2023

Linked below the Google Form, access to the liability form, and ShoWorks.

Citizenship Washington Focus

National 4-H Council’s premier leadership and civic engagement experience for high school students. Through Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF), teens experience Washington D.C. like never before. Using the nation’s capital as their classroom, CWF connects young leaders from across the country to gain the skills and experiences to become effective change agents.

To learn more about the CWF 2023 program, download the program agenda below.

Quick Facts about California 4-H at CWF:

  • The State 4-H Office coordinates all travel, lodging, registration, etc. for attendees
  • CWF knows this, and will reject any registrations accidentally put in by individuals
  • California 4-H offers two different trips for CWF
  • Attendance at CWF plus additional days for fun and educational sightseeing exclusively available for California 4-H members (CWF Extended Trip)
  • Attendance at only the CWF conference planned by National 4-H Council (CWF Only)
  • California 4-H send all of our attendees during the same week to streamline logistics and keep costs low
  • This year, our goal is to attend during the Fourth of July CWF Session (Schedule Linked Here); two counties have already expressed interest in attending this session
  • This session has unique activities not part of the other CWF Sessions
  • It may seem odd to encourage a 4-H trip during a national holiday, but celebrating Independence Day in our nation’s capital can be a once in a lifetime opportunity
  • This event has a considerable cost
  • Historically, team attendees have fundraised to obtain sponsorships for the trip
  • All counties on our list (except for Modoc) should have funds with their Council or VMO raised by the bi-annual Tractor Supply Paper Clovers event
  • This money is allocated for scholarships at 4-H camps, conferences, and other events that result and civic and leadership education
  • Reach out to your local staff to learn more
  • There are still some COVID-19 safety measures in place that everyone will want to review
