BRIGHTLINE TAKES NEXT STEPS ON ORLANDO EXPANSION PLANS
Brightline’s 170-mile northward expansion from West Palm Beach to the Orlando airport is on target for completion in 2022, with service expected to start in 2023 according to an update provided by Michael Cegelis, Brightline’s Executive Vice President of Infrastructure Development, at the April CFX Governing Board meeting.

Brightline has also advanced its Orlando-to-Tampa extension project, meeting with key stakeholders along the proposed route over the last few weeks. In order to complete the extension, CFX and Brightline must complete negotiations by July 2021 on their proposed 85-mile expansion from Orlando to Tampa. Brightline expects to complete this extension by 2029. CFX's Governing Board has asked for monthly updates from Brightline through the negotiation period.

By the end of April, drivers will enjoy an easier transition from northbound SR 436 (Semoran Boulevard) to westbound SR 528 (Beachline Expressway). A new flyover ramp will replace the tight loop ramp, providing a smoother traffic flow as part of this $118 million signature project. The big difference? A 40-mph speed limit on the new ramp versus the old 35 mph speed limit on the loop ramp. And drivers can expect a similar flyover ramp that will replace the southbound SR 436 to eastbound SR 528 loop ramp which CFX plans to complete this May.

Public input is a key component in CFX’s planning process, as a recent revision to the Southport Connector Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study demonstrates. Input from CFX’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and the study’s Environmental Advisory Group, prompted CFX to revise the study area limits. Due to environmental concerns, the project team enlarged the study area to include an alternative that crosses Lake Tohopekaliga, which will create more options for a route that can best serve this growing region and protect the environment.

The Southport Connector PD&E Study is evaluating alternatives for a new connection from the southern end of Poinciana Parkway east to Canoe Creek Road, with an interchange at Florida’s Turnpike.
