e- & mHealth SIG Newsletter
Welcome to our December newsletter
Dear e- & mHealth SIG members,

It's December and 2021 is drawing to a close. This sounds very unreal as I have barely digested 2020. As the world is working its way to turn pandemic to endemic, I feel a sense of relief that soon I can do many things I used to do: teaching in a real classroom, meeting friends, attending conferences in person and going on a trip. Speaking of these things, we have booked a trip across the border to Malaysia. It has never felt so exciting to book a flight that just takes 40 minutes. Fingers crossed we can go!

Before we say 'Bye' to 2021 we have a newsletter in stock you will hopefully enjoy. We highlight a massive scoping review the SIG committee completed and introduce its lead author Dr Melinda Hutchesson. We also provide you with some very recent e- & mHealth publication and give you some details about the 2022 Annual Conference of ISBNPA (we are going hybrid).

Enjoy reading, and have a wonderful festive season!

In Case You Missed It:
Highlighted e- & mHealth Publication
In this newsletter we would like to highlight the a collaborative project led by the ISBNPA e- & mHealth SIG Committee members.

As you may remember from our October newsletter, we embarked upon TWO scoping reviews of reviews that looked into e- & mHealth interventions targeting diet, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and obesity. The prior newsletter focused on interventions among children and adolescents (available HERE).

In this newsletter, we will highlight the results of the paper that focused on interventions among adults (ages 18+ years). The review is available HERE.

Check out the infographic of the main findings below:
Meet the Lead Author: Melinda Hutchesson
Melinda Hutchesson, PhD
Senior Lecturer (Nutrition and Dietetics)

I am a dietitian and mid-career researcher within the nutrition research program at the University of Newcastle, Australia. My research focuses on mental health promotion, and chronic disease prevention through health behaviour change. I have a specific and unique focus on the transitional young adult life stage, and how to best reach and engage this target group in behaviour change.

We got a chance to catch up with the author about the paper and other exciting happenings around ISBNPA. Here's what she had to say:

1. How did the paper idea come up?
  • Having previously led a couple of key systematic reviews in this space (e.g. Hutchesson et al, 2015 and Neve et al 2010) I was getting regular requests to review very similar systematic review of eHealth interventions. I felt like as a field we needed to take a step back and consider what evidence we have and where the gaps are to better guide evidence synthesis and implementation in this important area. The scoping review idea then evolved with the help of the e&mHealth SIG leadership committee.

2. What tips do you have for future researchers working in collaborative teams across the globe?
  • Find a team of enthusiastic, passionate researchers to work with, and it will make the task easier from the start (i.e. like the e- & mHealth SIG committee!)
  • Maintain good communication throughout the project.
  • Give everyone the opportunity to offer ideas and provide feedback, but remember someone needs to take a leadership role/make decisions.

3. What comments do you have for other researchers thinking about systematic reviews in this area?
  • Please read the recommendations from our scoping review, and ask yourself whether the research question you are hoping to answer from your review is unique or needed. We provided a number of key recommendations for the field to help guide future evidence synthesis.

4. Besides this awesome paper, what else have you been up to recently?
  • I stood down from the e- & mHealth SIG leadership committee in 2020, after 5 years. This was to establish and chair a new ISBNPA Young Adult SIG which focuses on the important young adult (16-35 years) transitional life stage.
