More than 30 individuals and groups were nominated for this year’s volunteer awards in three categories - individual, group and youth.

The winner will be announced on Dec. 16 from Paramount Automotive in Hickory. The Catawba County United Way would like to thank Paramount Automotive for donating a car again for this event and to thank Martin Starnes & Associates, CPAs for drawing the names each week.
Along with giving away a new car, the event helps raise awareness about the impact the United Way has in Catawba County through local programs that address needs in the areas of education, income and health.

United Way helps with Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
During the Faces of Homelessness event - We had some great guest speakers talking about all the local programs to help those facing hunger and homelessness in Catawba County - The Hickory Soup Kitchen, The Salvation Army, City of Hickory Police Dept. and Life House Rescue Mission. We also had a chance to hear from local residents facing homelessness.

Help with the Christmas Bureau Coat Drive
Along with toys and clothing, The Salvation Army also sponsors a coat drive for the Christmas Bureau every year. The collection will run from Nov. 2 to Dec. 9.
The Catawba County Christmas Bureau is a collaborative eort among many Catawba County agencies and organizations to provide toys, clothing and coats to children and teenagers in need of assistance during the Christmas season.
Last year, 750 coats were collected during the coat drive and this year the goal is 1,500. Children’s coats are especially needed.

In the last 30 days, NC 211 received more than 170 calls for help from Catawba County.
There were 26 calls about rent assistance, 13 calls about shelters, 14 calls about
