City of Toronto continues improvement of waterfront infrastructure in 2023 budget

The City of Toronto announced recent budget investments to continue to build and improve Toronto’s central waterfront with more than $160 million committed in the 2023 budget. The commitment will be realized, in part, through a multi-year investment in parks and community centres for projects that are underway, near completion or planned over the next five years.

The City’s ongoing efforts and leadership, including collaboration with the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and waterfront partners, have created North America’s largest urban redevelopment program and one of the most extensive waterfront revitalization efforts in the world.

Only Some Construction Material Costs Easing, Others Elevated and Sticky

In 2021 and continuing into early 2022, construction material costs, with the pandemic in full swing and interest rates effectively zero, shot up on a year-over-year basis like never before (see Graph 1). Contractors were largely caught by surprise and did not feel they could raise their bid prices right away. Individually, they were worried about winning contracts and surviving.

In 2022, an easing in material costs began while, at the same time, bid prices gradually stepped higher. As we move into the Spring of 2023, bid prices on a year-over-year basis, are now considerably higher than material cost increases. In fact, the latter has become negative.

Construction employment jumps 9.2 per cent as Ontario adds 338,000 jobs in 2022

A new Financial Accountability Office of Ontario (FAO) report shows the province gained more than 338,000 jobs last year, ending the strongest two-year period for job growth on record. The annual unemployment rate dropped to 5.6 per cent.

Construction employment rose by 49,300 (or 9.2%). Health care and social assistance, one of the largest sources of employment in Ontario, saw job growth of 34,400 (3.8%) in 2022. Other services recorded a decline in employment of -5,600 (-2.2%) in 2022, marking the third year of persistent job loss. Gains were seen in all age groups and were primarily full-time, private sector positions.

Technology vastly changing e-discovery process: WeirFoulds webinar speaker

When managing documents during dispute resolution, it’s important to have a plan and be prepared.

Crystal O’Donnell, CEO and senior counsel with Heuristica Discovery Counsel, explained e-discovery is how to get electronic information, how to deal with it, find the relevant information and produce it to the other side. In the past when paper was used, there was less information and it was easier to deal with, she said. Due to the nature of electronic information, there are now stages. The first stage is identification.

Retrofitting Canada’s building stock to achieve emissions targets

The Government of Canada recently released its 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan: Canada’s Next Steps for Clean Air and a Strong Economy, which lays out the many actions being taken to combat climate change. It also outlines what remains to be done to ensure Canada reaches its emissions-reduction target of 40 to 45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, and the path required for the country to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The plan points to the decarbonization of buildings as being a big piece of the puzzle, particularly since the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced by buildings have only increased over the last 20 years as the number of buildings from coast to coast to coast has grown.
