DATMA presents SHELTER 2022—23. This year, DATMA (Massachusetts Design Art and Technology Institute) is showing three exhibitions and "hosting robust programmatic outreach, and educational workshops designed to examine the history, economy, and culture of the South Coast region which is rooted in the value of 'shelter.'" With work by Rael San Fratello, Do Ho Suh, Fitzcarmel LaMarre, Abeer Seikaly, Alison Wells, and students from Our Sisters' School, this show brings the wider world into New Bedford with public art. SHELTER 2022 on view at UMass Dartmouth CVPA Swain Gallery at 715 Purchase Street, New Bedford MA. Indoor access is from 10 a.m. —8 p.m. daily and Sunday until 5 p.m. Outdoor locations are found throughout Downtown New Bedford and are free and open to the public. Two Villages Art Society presents The Artist Next Door, a show featuring the work of over 40 local New Hampshire artists who create work in a variety of mediums. From Matthew Smith's meticulously designed hand-made etchings of sea life, to Ukranian-born Tatiana Yanovskaya-Sink's oil paintings inspired by past Eastern-European masters, to Steve Frye and his wife Annie Frye whose woodwork and fabric art are separate yet complementary; there is a wide range of styles and mediums on display. The show runs through July 30.The gallery is open Thursday through Sunday, 12—4 p.m. Two Villages Art Society is located at 846 Main Street, Contookook, New Hampshire. Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill presents Deborah Dancy, Wes Brown & Julia Talcott, a three-person show that truly highlights the expertise of each artist. Deborah Dancy's multimedia artwork walks the line between abstract and figurative work. Her paintings, photos and drawings capture everyday moments through a unique lens. Wes Brown uses functional ceramics to "create works that memorialize struggle, trial, and triumph” in pieces that are rugged and dignified. Julia Talcott's award winning prints that explore the intersection of natural and artificial worlds round out the show. The show's opening reception is July 14, from 4 —6 p.m. Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 10 Meetinghouse Road, Truro, MA. John Douglas’ memorial retrospective documents his long, productive, and substantive body of work. Douglas called himself a “Truth Activist”. His irreverent, activist beliefs, and Zen-like appreciation of the world fueled his decades of creative output. Douglas unceasingly addressed injustice, hypocrisy, unjust wars, and climate change. In “Homeland Security'' he leverages American symbols and uses himself as a central actor with near complete humility to create a forceful critique of our cultural priorities.
NNEMoCA engages people with important ideas, the ongoing dialogue in contemporary visual arts & culture, and creates transformative experiences for visitors by fostering meaningful dialogue and challenging established perceptions.
