MAY IS OLDER AMERICANS’ MONTH

Recently JSL’s Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives, Barbra Giles, flew to Washington, D.C. as a member of LeadingAge, Michigan to speak with members of Congress and the Senate about issues and policies affecting older adults at JSL. She met with Rep. Rashida Tlaib and her aides, and with aides from the offices of Senator Gary Peters’, Debbie Stabenow, Elyssa Slotkin, Tim Walberg, and Rep. Dan Kildee. LeadingAge followed up with information affecting non-profits providing services to older adults. Here are some of their findings…

MAY is Older Americans Month. You may know this because at JSL we have been busy preparing for the annual Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish American’s Celebration, honoring those who are 95 years or older… These members of The Greatest Generation were celebrated today at Adat Shalom Synagogue. There were 19 centenarians in attendance for the very special celebration. Additionally, we are preparing to celebrate Eight Over Eighty at our 30th Annual Tikkun Olam event, the gala luncheon that honors 8 distinguished older adults who have dedicated their lives to repairing the world. The luncheon will be held in person at Congregation Shaarey Zedek on May 21. We are thrilled to come together in celebration after three years of isolation. Thank you to our Co-Chairs, Neil Satovsky and Arlene Selik and to our entire committee of devoted volunteers. Without your assistance, we could not put on the programs that our community has come to love.

Thank you to all who have provided financial support. JSL CEO Nancy Heinrich reminds us, “All funds raised from Eight Over Eighty help to subsidize the cost of every meal we serve in our federally assisted affordable communities to ensure that our residents receive nutritious Kosher meals. Your partnership with us in all that we do helps us maintain our 116-year-old promise to our community - to provide caring homes where our older adult community members find respect, dignity, independence, spiritual support and where we celebrate life together. every day. “ Join us in person for our celebration!

WE ENCOURAGE ALL PAST HONOREES TO SUPPORT THIS EVENT, SO WE CAN CELEBRATE TOGETHER!

JSL HAPPENINGS

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION

Thank you for being a FRIEND! Each year in April, the country recognizes its many volunteers with a national volunteer week. And each year in April, we recognize the generous gift of time our volunteers give JSL. This year, we enjoyed festive gatherings focused on the theme “You’re the Sweetest." Our volunteers run the boutiques, the bistro, the café, put on programs, visit residents, plan events, and make our residences the communities we love. We were happy to show our love with an opportunity to socialize with other volunteers, presentations by the staff whose work is made lighter by the many hands of our more than 150 active volunteers, and, best of all, enjoyed some sweet treats!

If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering, please click the application button below. Any questions, contact Beth Robinson: 248-592-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org

Meer Apartments residents visited Hillel Day School this week, the last visit of the school year. Students read passages of their experiences with the residents, the kindergarten class sang a song thanking the residents, and some students put together games to play.

Mazel Tov!

Our greater Detroit community is once again celebrating its spectacular annual Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration, honoring those who are 95 years or older.

They are the Greatest Generation.

It will be held on Friday, May 5th.

This heartwarming and beautiful event grows richer each year.

The number 95 is a healthy and happy number. It marks a perfect oxygen level. This event serves as the oxygen and the lifeline of our great community.

Additionally, 95 is the numerical value of two feminine Hebrew names, Yaffa and Malkah.

Yaffa means beautiful and Malkah symbolizes royalty.

Truly, beauty and royalty accompany the esteemed senior members in attendance.

Seniors, thank you for helping us maintain our oxygen levels.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
