Glenn Close on a mission to End Stigma
Surrounding Mental Illness
By: Allie Torgan, CNN
April 22, 2021

(CNN)Glenn Close is up for an Oscar this Sunday for her role in the film "Hillbilly Elegy."
But in real life, the Academy Award nominee and Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe winner is busy shining the spotlight on mental health awareness.
And for Close, it's personal.

"Most families are dealing with some aspect of mental health," Close told CNN. "When my sister Jess came to me and said, 'I need help because I can't stop thinking of killing myself,' it was like a bolt out of nowhere."

At age 50, after years of struggling, her sister Jessie was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Jessie's son, Calen Pick, was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in 2001.

"When you look back, I saw evidence of Jessie's mental distress when she was very young," Close said. "She would rub her fingers ... when she was anxious, until it was raw, sometimes bleeding. And now, that would be a major red flag."

Close said growing up her own family "had no vocabulary for it," and didn't talk about it. As she began to learn more about the painful stigma and discrimination that often surrounds mental illness, Close made it her mission to fight to end that stigma.

In 2009, with her sister Jessie and nephew Calen, she started Bring Change to Mind, a non-profit that advocates mental health awareness and support in schools and communities.

With the aim of fostering understanding and empathy, the group creates multimedia campaigns and develops youth programs to encourage a diverse cultural conversation around mental health.

Your Pandemic Recovery Plan
April 27, 2021

It has been well over a year since the pandemic became an unwelcome intruder into our lives. So many things have seemed out of our control. While we are not quite through with it yet, we are seeing the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. With that light comes the realization that we need to complete our own “Pandemic Recovery.”

What do we know about the stresses this pandemic has placed on most of us? Do any of these sound familiar?

The reality is, almost all of us have dealt with at least a couple of these. So, what to do? Let’s move forward with purpose, and implement our Pandemic Recovery Plan.

Pandemic Recovery Plan
We have spent more than enough months secluding, isolating, and fretting. We need human contact, to feel engaged with others, confident, comfortable, loved, and a better sense of calm and relaxation as we look to the remainder of 2021.

This is a lot to ask. Many still worry about themselves, or a family member, as the virus remains in our society. Financial concerns don’t disappear just because we want them to. Stress and worry don’t dissolve just because we don’t want to feel them anymore.

What we are talking about is incremental improvement. Wherever you are on your Pandemic Recovery journey, let’s now focus on getting better.

Some of us were able to deal with the pandemic with only a glancing blow. For others, it hit us head-on, and we may still be reeling from its effects. Yet all of us do need to take this opportunity to recover, whether it be from a mild or severe episode of pandemic-itis.

NAMI Walks 2021
A United Day of Hope!!

This spring, all roads lead to NAMIWalks Your Way: A United Day of Hope with the destination as always being Mental Health for All.
Many events will coincide on May 22, 2021.

Last year, with so many people sheltering in place and looking out for their safety, we shifted to a virtual event, NAMIWalks Your Way, which encouraged people to use their creativity and participate however they could given their situation. Thanks to so many amazing participants, we far exceeded expectations, which were already high.
Let’s keep the momentum going this spring — as we unite across the country to
insist on hope and celebrate Mental Health for All.

On the day of the event, NAMIWalks participants, mental health advocates, and
NAMI partners will step up our strength and energy even further. There are thousands of ways to reach a goal — and every one is yours. Together with you, NAMIWalks remains one of the top mental health walk series in the country.
