Straight to the Point

April 25, 2023

Attention Choir Members

Choir will not be meeting until further notice, stay tuned for updates.

From the Bridge Pastor

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is “Good Shepherd” Sunday. The idea of the Good Shepherd has Hebrew roots most commonly associated with Psalm 23. “The Lord is my shepherd….” It was the duty of the shepherd to care for the sheep by leading them to calm waters where they could safely drink, by protecting them from predators, and by leading them into a safe place where they could spend the night.

Christians see Jesus as the Good Shepherd who, through his teachings and actions, showed us how we can be good shepherds as we care for the weak and vulnerable; as we donate our time, talents, and money to help those in need; as we visit the sick and dying to remind them that they are not forgotten by their church family; and in so many other ways.

First Congregational United Church of Christ in Sioux City are very definitely good shepherds and eagerly share time, money, and other resources. Thank you!

The Easter lilies that adorned the sanctuary are not so pretty anymore.

Even though the lilies have lost their beauty, they are easily planted in a garden area and will bloom year after year (although not at Easter!). Jane and I have several plants on the east side of our house that are Easters several years ago. Feel free to pick one up and plant it for many years’ worth of enjoyment.

Fundraiser at Buffalo Alice.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 7, 2023, from 4:30-7:00 PM. The next fundraiser at Buffalo Alice will be for the Siouxland Soup Kitchen. Donations of canned fruits and vegetables and other non-perishable items will be collected at the door. $15 for adults, $1/age of the child, ages 2 and under are free. Silent and live auction items will be available for purchase. 100% of tips go to the Soup Kitchen.

Please invite family and friends to enjoy this event with you. If you are not able to attend but wish to contribute, you may send your money with me and I will put it in with the tips. Thank you.

From The Warming Shelter.

Hello, my name is Brittney Wilson and I will be doing volunteer coordinating for The Warming Shelter. We may have been in contact in previous years and I'm messaging today to see if your church/group would like to help us help our residents either by serving a meal or helping us process donations in our warehouse. As each year passes, the number of people we serve grows. We do well to be solely locally funded, but we still fall short keeping up with our donations and providing regular meals. We are blessed enough to be in a community where the people of it think of us so frequently and often inquire about our immediate needs. Whether it be your donation of time, food, or necessities, every little bit helps. Please let me know if you and your organization/group would like to cook & serve a meal, volunteer in our warehouse, or if you have something else in mind! I look forward to your reply.

Kind regards,

Brittney Wilson, Assistant Director

Mission of the Month: The Soup Kitchen

The Soup Kitchen has been chosen as the Mission of the month for April. They are now serving meals all seven days of the week and are serving between 125 and 140 each day. With this volume of people being served the need for food increases daily.

There is an immediate need for bread, margarine, eggs, canned fruit, potatoes, etc.  A complete list can be found on their website. There is also a link to Amazon on their website where you can order direct and it will be shipped directly to them.

 Tennis Shoes for Eric’s Closet

Eric’s Closet is in need of tennis shoes. If you have some in good shape, please bring them to church and Missions will see that they get delivered.

Fellowship Hosts

Please check the list of open dates for fellowship hosts to see if there is a Sunday that would work for you.

THE PRACTICE OF WORSHIP: Live Streamed on Facebook and Youtube, and recorded
We Live Stream our Sunday morning worship service via the church’s page on Facebook and Youtube at 10:30am on Sunday mornings. Every service is recorded and available to play at any time on those platforms. If you have trouble, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the church for help.

THE PRACTICE OF LEARNING: Zoom learning sessions each week 9:30 a.m. each Sunday.
Engage your mind in learning through theological reflection, asking hard questions about God and life, and test your embedded theology to see if that where you want to be.
A Closing note about ZOOM:
If you don’t have the ability or the equipment to use Zoom or Facebook to participate in these practices, please call the office. We will be happy to help you find a solution to fully participate in the life of the church.
