Cobbs Creek Foundation April Newsletter
STEM-based Learning at CCF's Math Clubs
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) offers volunteer-driven after-school weekly tutoring programs in two locations: WPACES on Mondays and OEC on Wednesdays. We owe the success of these programs to the brilliant and creative Tracy Paine, a 23-year veteran elementary school teacher who designs them for us. Each week, 45 students in grades one through three eagerly anticipate the project of the day as they break out into age-specific groups. Whether building parachutes for marshmallow peeps or filling plastic bottles at different levels to test for the most vertical landing, students engage in small group experiences where they predict, plan, create, and reflect on the outcomes. If you're interested in viewing any of these curricula, please contact Maria at Maria@cobbscreek.org, and she will gladly share the inspiring lesson plans with you.
Boys Latin Internship Highlights
We are currently hosting 14 high school juniors and seniors in the Cobbs Creek area schools, who are helping us with our community volunteer initiatives on all levels. In February, six outstanding juniors from The Boys' Latin School began interning with us as part of their school programming. They bring enthusiasm to our tutoring programs and have been assisting with our community cleanups and Saturday Fun Days. Beginning in May, we will host eight seniors from various out-of-area schools, who will each spend three intensive weeks with us. They will support area school classrooms, volunteer at local food banks, assist with tutoring programs, and help us plan our summer community activities, including our Academic Bridge Camp. These young citizens bring valuable insight and experience to our community efforts and help us grow as an organization. We're grateful for their contributions!
Saturday Fun Day Spring Fling!
We recently held our monthly Saturday Fun Day, and we were thrilled to see students from Overbrook Educational Center and West Philadelphia Academic Charter Elementary School join us for our Spring Fling Saturday Fun Day. Eighty students participated in team-building games, an egg toss, a giant egg hunt, and various crafts, including egg decorating. The event was a resounding success and brought joy to all involved. We extend our sincere gratitude to the 35 high school students whose leadership and spirit made this magic possible. Their hard work and dedication helped make the event a memorable experience for everyone. The faces of all involved tell the story!
