Demand for odd-hour care is high

Many families with nontraditional work schedules are struggling to find care for their children. Approximately 20% of the U.S. workforce works during odd hours, such as late nights, early mornings, overnight, and weekends. When it comes to low-income parents, half are working nontraditional hours. Quality child care is rarely available during these hours.

According a 2015 survey by the National Survey of Early Care and Education, only 2% of child care centers offer evening care, 6% offer overnight care, and 3% offer care on the weekends. Offering care during nontraditional hours has the potential to boost your child care business.

Lead Testing

All licensed child care providers received a letter in the mail informing them that the Office of Child Care is requiring all current licensed child care providers, as well as all applicants, to test their water supply for lead. All plumbing fixtures used for drinking, cooking, or preparing infant formula or washing fruits and vegetables must be tested. Drinking fountains and water dispensers in refrigerators must also be tested. Tests are not required for plumbing fixtures that are used for washing hands or brushing teeth.

All currently licensed child care homes and centers have until September 30, 2018 to complete testing.

In 2016, the State of Oregon conducted a survey to gather information about Oregon's early learning workforce. The study includes information on the number of providers in Oregon, the types of care provided, demographic information about providers, information about wages, and many other valuable pieces of information.

Classroom policies and tips

Registration closes at 1:00 pm on the day of class. For Saturday classes, registration closes at 1:00 pm on the Friday before class.

If you show up to class without prior registration, you will not be admitted.

Cancellations must be received at least 24 hours before the start of class to receive a credit on your account.

Class fees are not refundable.

No children are allowed in class, with the exception of breastfeeding infants.

Tip: Instructors do not have access to climate control in the classroom. We recommend that you dress in layers to ensure your comfort.

Reminder

CPR/First Aid certifications are good for two years. Classes fill up quickly, so plan ahead and register today!
