Letter From Our President,

Susan Allen

When someone told me, rather sadly, that, “…the pollen count is high…”, my response was to smile as I am delighted to see the flowers blooming, the tree leaves bursting forth, and the grasses growing wildly! After a long wet winter, it is so marvelous to see spring in action!

The Guild is offering our first free Zoom speaker in May. Shannon Conley, Going 3-D - Adding a New Dimension to Your Art Quilts will be talking to us on May 20 at 10am.

On October 11, Ellen Lindner will come to us with Confessions of a Fabric Whisperer. Be sure to join us for these bonus get-togethers.

When I first moved to Oregon, I wanted to meet like minded people. I volunteered to handle Membership for the Guild. It was the best thing I ever did! I got to meet and know so many wonderful fabric enthusiasts! I would like to invite you to join us. We are looking for volunteers to fill Board positions which will be vacated in September.  Let’s keep going for another 50 years!

And don’t forget, our June meeting is our once a year EVENING meeting.

See you at 7pm!

Susan Allen, President

Tips and Tricks

From President Elect, Jane Wolfe

Tip for Easy Needle Threading

Jane writes, "About five years ago, I purchased a sewing gadget at a quilt show and have used it nearly every day since. This daylight yo yo magnifier is the perfect magnifying glass and light to thread my sewing machine or needle when hand sewing. It’s compact, run by batteries and durable. When I told the Surface Design Group about this tool, it was sold on Amazon. Now I don’t find it."

Shannon considers herself an art Quilter “with-a-capital-Q”, but also loves to draft and make bags, dabble in embroidery and crochet, and generally participate in the awesome craftiness that the modern blogosphere has facilitated!

Calls for Entry

CFG Online Exhibitions

1. Color Play

Submissions June 1-26, 2023

Color is one of the elements of design that we often take for granted.

Look at your piece and think about what the colors are saying:

Calm? Hot? Quiet? Vibrating?

Rhythm in the Landscape

by Jill Hoddick

Can you identify an emotion that the colors promote?

Are you using a complementary color scheme? Triadic? Monochromatic? Split complement?

Tell us how the interplay of colors carries your intended story.

The submission link for Color Play will be sent to your inbox on May 30.

2. Paint and Stitch

Submissions December 1-29, 2023

Dunnewold, Benner, Pasquini Masopust, Busby and many more laid the foundation years ago of combining painting on fabric and then stitching.

This technique has broadened how we think of fiber art.

How do you use these two techniques to enhance your piece?

Bird

by Jill Hoddick

What kind of paint do you use? Thread?

What effects and opportunities can you achieve using these methods?

Do you have a favorite artist and/or book that have helped you using these two techniques?

Please read the online exhibition and photo requirements for both calls for entry above by clicking on the boxes below:

News from Jane Wolfe

Jane has had three pieces juried into the Spring Art Show by Southwest Washington Artists - one fiber piece showing a variety of mono prints and two ceramic pieces.

News from Peggy Ellis

Peggy's art piece 2020: Put The Kettle On! is part of the exhibition Common Threads at The Second Story Gallery in the Camas Public Library from May 5 to June 25. Common Threads is a group art show that explores the rich history of Camas, Washington, and the broader Southwest Washington region. Featuring the work of local artists, the exhibition invites viewers to explore the area's past through a diverse range of artistic mediums. The artwork in this show provides a glimpse into the complex and multifaceted history of the area.

The title of Peggy's piece, 2020: Put The Kettle On! references the beginning of the pandemic and how tea is used to soothe life’s problems. The question in the piece is whether the tea drinker is isolated due to the pandemic and thus prevented from this soothing chin wag, or not.

Where Can Fabric and Textiles be Recycled?

Marni Tapscott, a new CFG member submitted the following inquiry. She writes,

"I've become more aware in recent years of how much fabric manufacturing can cause pollution. I know there is starting to be some sustainably produced and organic options for manufactured clothing. I would like to reduce my consumption of new clothing and fabric through buying used clothing, selling or giving away my clothing, etc. I have been looking for a place to bring clothing that is no longer in good enough shape to be used again for clothing including worn out socks, underwear and larger garments. I have not been very successful at finding places.

Can anyone reading this article provide suggestions for where old, worn out items can be recycled? I would be grateful to receive answers or suggestions in an upcoming newsletter, and/or email me at marni_tapscott@yahoo.com.

Thank you readers,"
