P.L.A.C.E. with CAMPSSAH
The Center for the Advancement of Multicultural Perspectives on Social Science, Arts, and Humanities (CAMPSSAH) is pleased to announce four new opportunities as part of the P.L.A.C.E. with CAMPSSAH Advancing Faculty Diversity (AFD) grant. This AFD grant, funded through the UC Office of the President, promotes the development and retention of faculty by promoting community-building, providing leadership training, and recognizing outstanding “engaged excellence” scholarship. You can visit our webpage for more information about the PLACE grant.

We are now accepting applications and nominations for the following initiatives:
SCHOLAR OF THE QUARTER (WINTER)
The Scholar of the Quarter is a new initiative that recognizes faculty at the Assistant or Associate ranks whose scholarship epitomizes engaged excellence, defined as scholarly or creative achievements that involve diverse communities with a commitment to social change. Successful applicants may have accomplished one or more of the following:
  1. Developed innovative curriculum which engages diverse student populations with collaborative work in communities
  2. Demonstrated long standing commitment to advocating on behalf of underserved communities
  3. Produced creative/scholarly work that brings awareness to critical issues facing marginalized communities locally or globally
  4. Conducted research that challenges “normative” disciplinary boundaries

Graduate students, post-docs, and faculty are invited to nominate faculty scholars.

Please visit our webpage for more details and award requirements.

Application deadline: February 1, 2021.
MANUSCRIPT WORKSHOP
The Manuscript Workshop will aid selected faculty in getting a project from rough draft to published manuscript by providing financial resources to secure critical feedback.

Specifically, PLACE will offer up to $2,500 each for four UC Davis faculty to allow the recipients to convene a one- to two-day workshop that brings together chosen experts in the scholar’s field to help prepare a manuscript for submission to a publisher. The manuscript workshop must take place between March 15, 2021 and September 17, 2021.

This opportunity is available for CAMPSSAH Scholars (Associate ranks) and to mid-career (Associate) CAMPSSAH Faculty Affiliates who are working on their second book/creative project towards promotion to full professor.

Please visit our webpage for more details and award requirements.

Application deadline: February 8, 2021.
POST-TENURE START-UP AWARD
The COACHE survey at UC Davis (2017) demonstrated that at UC Davis job satisfaction plummets at the Associate Professor rank. Additionally, scholars in the humanities, arts, and social sciences are more likely to spend longer at the Associate rank than STEM-based faculty.

To help address this problem, PLACE with CAMPSSAH will offer two newly-tenured faculty a “start-up” package of $4,000 as an Academic Enrichment Fund to assist them in the development of a new project or allow them to refocus their energies in ways more attuned with their desired career path within the university. This package can consist of enrollment in the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD) Post-Tenure Pathfinder’s Program or seed money for a new project.

During the two-year grant cycle, this package will be available to social science, arts, or humanities faculty who have received tenure after June 30, 2018. Some preference will be given to faculty who are already affiliated with P.L.A.C.E. or CAMPSSAH.

Please visit our webpage for more details and award requirements.

Application deadline: February 15, 2021.
SUMMER WRITING RETREAT
P.L.A.C.E. will host a small group (4-6 faculty) to engage in a week-long writing retreat. This writing retreat in the early summer (mid-to-late June 2021, pending public health safety requirements) is geared toward faculty working to complete a big task (e.g. writing an introduction, a book proposal, or a chapter in a book project) who would benefit from uninterrupted, concentrated writing time, and structured feedback within a setting where their meals and lodging are provided.

All Senate faculty are eligible to apply, with preference given for faculty who are CAMPSSAH Scholars or CAMPSSAH Affiliates. Scholar applicants must be engaged in work that centers a critical, intersectional lens – particularly on race, gender, sexuality and class inequalities.

This retreat will offer writing consultant support from Elena K. Abbott (Ink Blotter) and the Faculty Director of CAMPSSAH will also be in-residence.

Please visit our webpage for more details and award requirements.

Application deadline: April 15, 2021.
More about CAMPSSAH
CAMPSSAH builds on the Impact Recruitment Initiative (IRI), whose origins are in calls for greater numbers of faculty whose teaching, research and service focused on the experiences, contributions and aspirations of African-American and African Diaspora students and communities. CAMPSSAH represents the successful institutionalization and broadening of IRI to encompass the recruitment, integration, and retention of those faculty whose research, teaching, scholarly and creative production bring multicultural perspectives to the social sciences, humanities and the arts with an emphasis on contributions that elevate the voices and visibility of underrepresented students and communities at UC Davis. CAMPSSAH also provides a space for these faculty to strengthen and enhance their engagement with underserved communities through their research and service, within and beyond the campus of UC Davis.
