April proved to be an amazing month for the homeless pets of GMHS. A total of 27 pets were adopted into their forever homes! Above are just a few of the heart connections made this month.

GMHS Celebrates Volunteer Appreciation Week
April 18 to 24 marked National Volunteer Week, and GMHS celebrated their commitment to our life-saving mission by sharing volunteer opportunities on the shelter's social media.
In 2020 alone, despite the constraints of COVID-19, our volunteers donated 6,775 hours of their time. From piloting Highway to Home transports to grooming pets of all types, they make a wonderful difference in the lives of homeless pets and are valued members of our team.
To our volunteers, thank you for giving selflessly of your time, resources, and talents to save and transform the lives of our community's pets in need!

April 2021 Shelter Snapshot
April was another great month for adoptions and and transfers through our Highway to Home program. We are grateful to all who made it so! The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners. We are also committed to education, outreach, and transparency. Our annual statistics are available on our website, and we also offer you a monthly snapshot.

Highway to Home
Dogs and cats aren't the only pets transferred through this successful program! Spuds the guinea pig is just one of the many pets who made their heart connection on the Highway to Home! In April alone, 10 small animals found their way to adoption-guaranteed partners in addition to the 41 dogs and 44 cats. We are happy to play a role in saving and transforming the lives of all homeless pets! Thank you to all of the GMHS team members, volunteers, adoption-guaranteed partners, and our friends at Petco Love who make these life-saving transports possible.

GMHS is excited to announce our new program to help heartworm positive dogs, Help for Hearts! It is our goal to transfer in more heartworm positive dogs from shelters in need, provide them the treatment they need, and help them make lasting heart connections.
Many shelters lack the resources necessary to provide heartworm treatment to each dog who tests positive: The cost of treatment varies by weight and can be as much as $1,000. Due to a lack of resources, some shelters may be faced with euthanizing heartworm-positive dogs or choosing to forego testing them prior to adoption for fear of the results.
There is no shortage or heartworm positive dogs in shelters throughout the region, and we are committed to saving their live. We invite you to partner with us in this effort
Every day at GMHS, homeless pets like Wennie live because you give. Your donation will help us expand our Help for Hearts program and ensure heartworm-positive dogs receive the shelter, care, time, and space needed to heal before adoption into their forever home.
