Dear Neighbors,

More arrests in Carjacking Cases

Police announced the April 22, 2021 arrest of Leonard Johnson, 22 of the 5300 block of S. Sacramento, for the robbery and vehicular hijacking of a 27 year old male in the 900 block of W Armitage.  It is great that the detectives have followed up in this case and made an arrest.  We will be following this case in court advocacy.

During April, police also announced arrests of 4 juveniles for 8 carjacking incidents and one other adult for a December 2019 incident.

In addition, we are pleased that the Police are continuing to make arrests in connection with last summer’s looting, including the case of Marcellars Boyce, 22, of the 4300 block W Flournoy.  He is charged with felony burglary and looting for looting in the 1600 block of N. Reopening Chicago

Yesterday, Mayor Lightfoot announced that Chicago was entering a new phase of re-opening. Based on improving metrics and the dramatic rise in vaccinations, the City is allowing increased capacities and more events. This great news will allow new opportunities for life to begin to return to normal.

Most of these new guidelines apply to businesses and special events, which can be viewed here. Please review them carefully to make sure your business or event complies.

For most of us, the biggest changes will apply if we get vaccinated. More people can attend private events if they are vaccinated, and vaccinated people don't have to wear masks outdoors under many circumstances.

Fortunately, our Ward's case numbers are coming down again - but please know that the numbers are still higher than they were last summer. If you haven't been vaccinated, do it now. And continue to wear your masks until you are fully vaccinated,

Covid Mortgage Relief

Through the CARES Act, homeowners with federally-backed mortgages can put their loans into forbearance for six months to a year.

At the end of the forbearance, the missed payments are either recapitalized through a modification or are put on the end of the loan as a non-interest-bearing balloon payment. Reverse mortgage borrowers, and borrowers who are already behind on their mortgage (or are even in foreclosure) are eligible. Although the CARES Act set a Dec. 31 deadline for signing up for this option, President Biden has extended those deadlines to the end of June.

Chicago Volunteer Legal Services has a self-help tool on its website: COVID-19 Mortgage Relief - Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (cvls.org). There, homeowners can check if their loan is federally-backed and fill out form letters to send to their lender. A dedicated hotline and email for homeowners who have trouble navigating the internet: 312-332-8785; COVID@cvls.org. FAQs and referrals to other resources are also posted.
