STEM Teacher Externships
By Nathan VanZante, Externship Mentor
During the summer of 2022, Shenandoah Middle School Science Teacher, Angela Hunter, worked at Green Plains, an agri-tech company and bio-refinery, in Shenandoah, Iowa. While at Green Plains, Angela was working alongside scientists in one of their on-site labs. Angela says, "I would highly recommend a summer externship. In addition to earning three graduate credits and a nice income over the summer, I learned a great deal and was able to bring those experiences back to the classroom".
She isn’t the only one gaining this valuable experience either. This is just one example of the Iowa STEM Externship program – all across the state, teachers are bridging the gap between the classroom and the workforce. Now the opportunity is available for the summer of 2023.
Every K-12 teacher in Iowa that teaches any STEM subject is eligible to participate. If you apply, the Southwest Iowa STEM team will work to match you with a local STEM business. This match is based on what you teach, your skillset, and what aligns with your interests. In addition to engaging in unique professional development experiences, every teacher that participates in this 6-week externship program will be paid up to $5,000 and given 3 graduate credits.
