This is one of the many great pumpkins carved at this month's youth event. This Sunday is not only Halloween but also Reformation Day. This is the day we celebrate that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany to start a theological conversation of the sale of indulgences for one's sins. As a faith community we lean heavily on Martin Luther's understanding that we are saved by God's grace alone, not by anything that we can do our buy to earn it.

A Message from Pastor Sara
This coming Sunday is one of my favorite days.
Not because it's Halloween. I think I was scarred for life to like Halloween when I had to wear a homemade orange clown costume for several years in a row.
Not because it's Reformation Day. The great historical day in 1517, when Martin Luther, who dearly loved the church, tried to make it better.
This coming Sunday is one of my favorite days because we will have young people proclaiming their faith and affirming their baptisms. Confirmation Day is always such a great day to see how the Holy Spirit has uniquely gifted each of these young people. They have each chosen bible verses that are perfect for them. They have each answered the same questions in unique and beautifully faithful ways. And these were not easy questions! I encourage you to think about how you would answer them for yourself:
- Tell a personal story of your favorite Bible verse.
- Who is a person that has influenced you on your faith journey?
- Why are you a follower of Jesus? (Explain it in a way your friends could understand)
- How will you continue to live out your baptismal promises in your actions?
There will some faith statements at both online and in-person worship. It's most certainly a week you won't want to miss!
God's Peace,
Pastor Sara

How to Serve For Winter Relief
Joy Reigns will be joining two other ELCA congregations, Our Shepherd - Severna Park and Christ - Millersville, to share the fourth week of November (Monday November 22nd through November 29th) for the county Winter Relief Emergency Shelter. There are MANY ways to serve:
Chaperone: Be present to help guests as needed. Help with dispensing medicines. Answer questions. Help to serve meals. Simply be present.
Drivers: Pickup and drop off guests at the Community Recover Center (CRC); 514 Crain Hwy N # K, Glen Burnie, MD 21061.
Meal Prep: Prepare breakfast in the morning on site. Prepare dinner items at home and bring them in to be served in the evenings.
Meal Servers: Portion and deliver meals to guests at their tables.
Special Needs: Be a “go to” person should something need to be done, like picking someone up at work in the middle of the night when their shift ends, running to store to get that item we ran out of, and more specific things like setting up and tearing down the cots on Mondays.
Please contact Tina in the church office ASAP if you are interested. There are only a few spots left for some jobs. Families are welcome to serve, however a guardian must be present for anyone under the age of 18. Strict COVID protocols will be in place.

- Joy Thrift cashiers

Steps 1-4: Building a Foundation
A team has been set up by the JRLC Council to explore the RIC (Reconciling in Christ) process. Team members are KL Broom, John Williams, John Osborn, and Hannah Rosekrans.
Since 1983, the Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Program has been a public way for faith communities to see, name, celebrate, and advocate for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions in the Lutheran church. The RIC Program is made up of congregations, synods, colleges, seminaries, outdoor ministries, and other Lutheran organizations.
JRLC’s strategic plan, announced in June 2020, explores the process of becoming a RIC congregation. As the 11+ step process continues, your input will be sought and valued. The steps include education and testimonials as well as the crafting of a Welcoming Statement with congregational involvement throughout. The process includes a congregational vote to publish the statement and officially be considered a RIC Congregation.
The RIC process will begin by offering the congregation opportunities for engagement and input, and for understanding together what calling ourselves “RIC” means—and doesn’t mean. Look for more information and opportunities for engagement in the coming weeks. To learn more go to: https://www.reconcilingworks.org/resources/ric/
