Red Cliff, Native Vote Host Education Dinner

From Dee Sweet, Native Vote Manager, Wisconsin Conservation Voices

Boozhoo,

These last two weeks have warmed my heart seeing our communities come together to have important conversations about our collective voting power. Wisconsin Native Vote worked alongside the the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Ho-Chunk Nation, and the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) to host dinners in Milwaukee and Bayfield.

We discussed the impacts the Wisconsin Supreme Court has on Indian Country and heard from speakers including Chairman Christopher Boyd of Red Cliff, Allison Neswood of NARF, and Dr. Rick St. Germaine of the Lac Courte Oreilles tribe. Attendees shared a meal together, asked questions, joined in conversation, and vowed to turn out to vote on Tuesday, April 4.

We also named Mardella Gustafson (Ojibwe, Lac du Flambeau) our super volunteer of the year for her personal commitment and daily efforts to get out the vote!

The success of these events and our work would not be possible without the support of tribal leadership and members. The continuous backing for Wisconsin Native Vote from Chairman Boyd means everything to us. Additionally, the staff at Legendary Waters Casino went above and beyond. It’s the persistent word-of-mouth in our tribal communities that can make any event a rousing success.

Chii Miigwech to all who came out to join us for a great time at Legendary Waters!

We continue to celebrate the dedication to voter turnout by the tribal nations across the state. Because of this, we have seen tremendous increases in voter turnout – particularly in Red Cliff. We know that together, we have power.

So together, we will vote on Tuesday, April 4 for our ancestors, our veterans, our future generations, and for our people.

You can pledge to vote for the April 4 election here and we’ll send you a postcard with all the voting information you need right before the election.

Miigwech (thank you) for being a voter,

Dee Sweet

RCCHC offers Physical Medicine & Rehab Services

Dr. Kate at the Red Cliff Community Health Center is a “physiatrist" -- a medical doctor who specializes in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). PM&R has been an official medical specialty since 1947. A physiatrist goes to 4 years of medical school followed by 4 years of residency training. A physiatrist’s role is to help to restore a person to their fullest physical, mental, psychological, and social ability.

Physiatrists treat conditions that interfere with one’s ability to participate in their roles in life. A physiatrist is trained in general medicine with a focus on musculoskeletal / orthopedic, neurological, and rheumatological conditions. They are trained to know what physical, occupational, and speech therapists do and how to prescribe these therapies in addition to being trained in team management, helping to coordinate all these different specialties for the best outcome.

Part of the training is in body biomechanics and kinesiology, learning how the body moves and the “physics” involved. Other team members include rehabilitation nurses, psychologists, social workers, and nutritionists, all valuable members.

In the early 1900’s, our first antibiotics, sulfa and penicillin, were discovered. Large numbers of people survived injuries from world wars. About the same time were the polio epidemics. Both historical events resulted in many people trying to live with disabilities and the doctors at the time said: “We need a new kind of doctor to help these people."

Physiatrists diagnose and treat people with brain problems such as strokes, head injuries, tumors, spinal cord problems including injuries and disorders such as multiple sclerosis, and nerve and muscle diseases including muscular dystrophies, peripheral neuropathies, and Lou Gehrig’s disease. Many of these conditions are not “curable” but people with these conditions can learn to live happy, productive lives through restored mobility and independence in daily activities. Physiatrists treat people with wounds to prevent amputations, treat amputees, do sports medicine, and general musculoskeletal aches and pains such as spine and joint pain. Many people with disabling conditions have trouble with musculoskeletal problems in addition to bowel, bladder, sexual dysfunction, limb swelling, and skin problems. Exercise is often a foundation of the prescribed treatment. Even people with cancer can benefit from physiatric evaluation and treatment.

A physiatrist believes that healthcare is delivered considering the person’s goals in being treated and that those goals are what leads the team.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation services will be provided one week per month at the Health Center. If you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call Lisa Cadotte, Clinic Manager at (715)779-3707.

Harm Reduction - Keep our Community "SAFE"
Saving lives from HIV and Hepatitis C requires aggressive strategies to reach people at high risk. The purpose of the Red Cliff SAFE Program is to help reduce harm from risky behaviors.

The SAFE Program is operated out of the Red Cliff Community Health Center. This program is available to all members of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa as well as surrounding communities. Individuals can access clean syringes, sharps containers, sterile water, antibiotic cream, alcohol wipes, and condoms. By improving access to these materials, we help people who inject heroin, meth, and other drugs to reduce their risk of contracting HIV and Hepatitis C.

In addition, the Red Cliff Community Health Center now offers Narcan. Narcan is for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. When you come in for our needle exchange, you can request a dose(s) of Narcan at no charge to you.

If you or a loved one are at risk for HIV or Hepatitis C, we will never judge you or your behaviors. You can access the services by simply stopping at the health center reception and asking for the SAFE Program. The services are provided within the health center setting and are completely confidential.

The goal is to expand sites within the next year. The current services are available Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm except holidays. You can get more information by calling (715) 779-3707.
