Celebrate Earth Month with these Green Tukwila activities

April is Earth Month, a worldwide annual event that celebrates environmental protections and educates on ways we can keep our planet green. April is a time to reflect on our consumption and form sustainable habitats that support the earth and each other.

There are many ways to participate in Earth Month; check out these great opportunities below. Learn more on the Green Tukwila Partnership webpage.

Meet the Trees, Self-guided Tree Walk

Branch out with the 2023 Tukwila Tree Challenge. Fill up a water bottle and take a self-guided tree walk in four local parks. Each park will have signs identifying native trees and explaining why trees are essential to the region. By the end of the tree walk, you will know about Western Red Cedars, Dogwoods, Bigleaf Maples, and so much more.

Participating parks:  Codiga Park, Riverton ParkTukwila Park, and Crestview Park

Wildlife Wednesday Free Lecture Series

Pollinators at Home with Leia Althauser,

April 5, 2023, 5:45 pm

Discover the relationship between plants, pollinators, and you with Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife Conservation Educator Leia Althauser.

Find opportunities to explore common pollinators who may live in your neighborhood and experiment with different ways to make your outdoor spaces “move-in ready” for pollinators.

This is a hybrid event at the Tukwila Community Center and online with Zoom. Sign-up today.

Hands-On Green Tukwila Volunteer Restoration Work Parties

Local Forest Stewards need hands-on help removing noxious weeds in our parks to create healthy habitats for wildlife and a cleaner watershed for all. Fun Fact: Tukwila’s Parks are like giant sponges that soak up dirty water from roadways and air pollution, filter it, and restore clean air and water in the environment. The more trees and native plants, the more pollution can be filtered out. Join us!

April is Emergency Communications Month

Sign-up For ALERT King County Today

In an emergency, our Emergency Management Team may need to reach the community quickly to provide important information that could protect your life or your family members’ lives. How do we attempt to reach all the members of our community quickly? The answer is Mass Notification Systems.

Mass Notification Systems send real-time alerts with important, lifesaving information. Most systems will allow you to choose how you would like to receive your alerts - landline phone, cell phone, and/or email are all options.

Across the country, mass notification systems have previously been used to notify communities of curfews, boil water orders, Tornado warnings, shelter-in-place, active shooters, school lockdowns, evacuations, and more. There is no doubt that receiving these notifications have saved countless lives.

The City of Tukwila uses ALERT King County, a CodeRed product, as it’s mass notification system to alert you of emergencies in our community. Sign-up is free and easy to complete online. You’ll provide the necessary information, such as your phone numbers, email, address, and how you’d like to receive your messages. Once you’re enrolled, you don’t have to ever go through the process again. If you change your mind about receiving alerts, you can cancel them at any time.

The information you provide at registration remains safeguarded by CodeRed as proprietary, which means that the City of Tukwila cannot see an individual’s information that’s been entered into the system, but we can use it to send emergency alerts.

Are you a business owner? This system is for you too! Consider signing up for Alert King County to receive critical emergency messages that could protect you, your business, and your employees.

Sign-up is free and easy at:  www.TukwilaWA.gov/AlertKC

Let’s plan ahead for flooding, together

Did you know more than 57,000 people in King County live in areas at high risk of flooding? Thousands more people work or commute every day near rivers, streams and shorelines that are at risk of flooding.

No one should be left behind when a flood happens. King County is developing a plan that will shape flood related programs, policies, and infrastructure for years to come. You don’t need to be a flooding expert to join the conversation.

Visit the 2024 King County Flood Management Plan engagement hub today. You can share what flooding problems concern you and what services would benefit your community in an online survey, open through June 30. You can also check out an upcoming events calendar or suggest events for King County to come to in your community.

For more information about this project visit kingcounty.gov/FloodPlan or contact Jason Wilkinson at 206-477-4786 or jason.wilkinson@kingcounty.gov.
