May Is Older Americans Month

Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM). The 2023 theme is Aging Unbound, which explores diverse aging experiences and how to combat stereotypes. Join us in promoting flexible thinking about aging – and discover how we can all benefit when older adults remain engaged, independent, and included.

Healthy-ish Tuna Veggie Casserole

Whether cloudy skies or a sense of nostalgia are the motivating factors, there's no doubt that many people turn to comfort foods when they want to self-soothe. The question is -- how can you tweak a recipe so that it meets your personal dietary needs?

This no-fuss take on the classic is perfect for a rainy afternoon when you’re in the mood for something hearty but nutritious. The pasta provides whole grains, while the tuna offers heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for senior nutrition. Broccoli and peas are also rich sources of nutrients and antioxidants.

Patient Advocacy Conference

Our friend Teri Dreher, an RN with 36 years of experience, has always been passionate about keeping the patient at the center of the nursing care model. This led her to form NShore Patient Advocates, LLC in 2011.

With a background in critical care nursing and home-based health care, combined with experience as a cardiovascular nurse clinician, Teri knows the complexities and challenges of obtaining premium quality care, especially in fast-paced hospital settings. She is committed to helping patients navigate acute illnesses and reducing the possibility of medical error. On Friday, June 16, 2023, her company will present the first ever Patient Advocacy Conference for the general public in the Chicago area at the Abbington Distinctive Banquets in Glen Ellyn, IL.

Resources for Seniors & Families

The Comfort Keepers team works with many local organizations and programs that provide services for older adults. One example is the State of Illinois Community Care Program (CCP), which helps senior citizens, who might otherwise need nursing home care, to remain in their own homes by providing in-home and community-based services.

Mother's Day Is Sunday, May 14

The official Mother's Day holiday arose in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother's 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother's Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.

We wish all the mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers and adoptive mothers a day of relaxation and fun!

“When your mother asks, "Do you want a piece of advice?" it's a mere formality.

It doesn't matter if you answer yes or no.

You're going to get it anyway.”
