Our All Too-Human Patriarch: The Story of Jacob
Tuesday nights @ 7:30 pm, beginning October 13
Teacher: Rabbi Ken Berger
The story of Jacob is one of the most fascinating stories in the Bible. In our reading of this wonderful biblical narrative, we will focus on the personality of Jacob, on his relationships with his parents, his brother Esau, his father-in-law, and his wives, Leah and Rachel, and on his spiritual and ethical development.  Jacob is one of the three Patriarchs of the Jewish people. In addition to a close study of the biblical text, we will see how some of these stories have stimulated the imagination of modern poets, with very contemporary concerns. Participants should have a copy of the JPS Tanakh.

The Merchant of Venice: Shakespeare, Shylock & Anti-Semitism

Core Year II
Mondays, 9:15 –10:15 am on Zoom -Taught by Lori & Rabbi Ben Kramer
The Melton School Core Curriculum is a comprehensive, sequential series of text-based lessons, comprised of four courses. Each course focuses on at least one major area of Jewish learning, and forms a thread in a carefully woven fabric which integrates Jewish history, religion, ritual, language, ethics, philosophy, literature, theology and contemporary Jewish life.

Crossroads of Jewish History
Emphasizing the richness of Jewish memory, this chronological exploration focuses on the significant crossroads where Jews made decisions that shaped our identity and destiny.

The Ethics of Jewish Living
The course sheds light on how Jewish scholars and thinkers with multiple approaches consider contemporary issues that affect us individually and as a community.
This course will alternate between one week of Crossroads, one week of Ethics.

Sefer Devarim (Book of Deuteronomy)
Thursdays 9:30 –11:00 am on Zoom - Taught by Yehoshua Ben Avraham
In our study of the fifth book of the Torah, we join Moses in his final address to nation, standing just beyond the land of Canaan, a land that he himself will never enter. There Moses recalls Israel’s past, reiterates laws that he had communicated to the people at Mount Sinai, and emphasizes that observance of these laws is essential for the well-being of the people in the land they are about to possess. Many timeless themes are explored, lessons from the past that illuminate the present as well as the future.

The Tish planned for Thursday, October 15 at 7:45 pm, we will lead off with the next (amusing, educational and brief) National Yiddish Folksbiene Yiddish lesson which can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWh6ausccNk

You may want to take a look at this youtube before we meet.

Also, if you would like to share one or more artifact-type family photographs and describe their who, what, where and when in Yiddish, that would be most welcome. We are thinking of having a few people do this at each Tish. If you would like to scan and email your photographs in advance,to Barry Sufrin, we can share them on the Zoom call or you can just hold them up in front of your computer camera during the Tish.

We would like to read Sholom Aleichem’s autobiography “From the Fair” and discuss it in Yiddish at the next Tish and/or try to translate selected passages back to Yiddish. This book is available on Kindle, Nook and in paperback. Amazon offers the book at https://www.amazon.com/Fair-Autobiography-Sholom-Aleichem/dp/0670803901.

"The Hearing Loop"
Moriah has a loop system available for individuals using hearing aids, to improve communication access for our members and guests with hearing loss. To access this system, tell your audiologist or hearing instrument specialist that your synagogue is "looped" and ask if there is a t-coil in your hearing aid(s). Then make an appointment to have it activated. If your hearing aids do not have a t-coil, talk with him/her about alternate ways of accessing the loop.
