GLOBALIZE DC'S NEW ONLINE JAPANESE PROGRAM - DEADLINE: 10/2/20!

Japanese Tamago - Online Program
Program Dates: SY20-21, beginning mid-October
Application Deadline: October 2, 2020
Here's a new opportunity for DC students who love Japan. Due to COVID-19, Globalize DC has suspended its regular afterschool Japanese language, culture, and career exposure program, Japanese Plus. Instead, we are offering a new free online program - also for DC high school students. This program will offer introductory Japanese language, as well as cultural lessons and special guest visitors. The program meets once a week for two hours, beginning mid-October. We will accept up to 30 students. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a DCPS or DC charter high school, and committed to full participation in our weekly meetings.

Freer and Sackler Educator Resources 
The National Gallery of Asian Art (Freer and Sackler) offers rich professional development and classroom resources for K-12 teachers. This includes reserved Virtual K-12 Field Trips, led by docents on a daily basis, except for Wednesdays. Programs can be customized to last from twenty minutes to one hour, and will be hosted live by Freer and Sackler docents. Upcoming Teacher Virtual Workshops include:

US Department of State Online Resources on International Education for K-12 Teachers 
The US State Department has created two online courses (MOOCs) for use in K-12 classrooms and for professional development. Each includes lesson plans and videos, allowing educators to engage with knowledgeable peers and experts for support in fostering students' global competences. The two courses are Global Education 101 and Teaching Online for Global Competence. Enrollees can work at their own pace to complete 5 hours of asynchronous instruction for each course. Educators who complete these courses will receive a digital badge and a certificate confirming 5 professional learning hours for each course.

EngageAsia Webinar - The AmerAsian School in Okinawa: The Past and Future of Bilingual & Bicultural Education in Okinawa 
Program Date: Wed, October 7, 7-8 pm EDT (Japan: Thurs, October 8, 8-9 am JST) 
Those involved in bilingual education may find this webinar of special interest. The AmerAsian School in Okinawa was created to provide its students with a bilingual/bicultural education, respecting both Japanese and American cultures, and a safe environment for Amerasian children to explore and develop their own identities. Join this webinar to learn more about this innovative example of bilingual/bicultural education in an international context.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCHOOLS AND FAMILIES 

TABLE FOR TWO - #Onigiri Action 2020
Program Dates: Oct 1- 31, 2020
This fall, TABLE FOR TWO (TFT), a global nonprofit with roots in Japan, will once again sponsor its #OnigiriAction Campaign. Schools are encouraged to take part in this fun, educational, and yummy service activity, featuring the popular Japanese food "onigiri" (rice ball). Students make, decorate, and eat rice balls, and then post pictures of their onigiri enjoyment on the TFT website. Each onigiri photo post brings 5 school meals to children in need. This is a great classroom or school-wide activity that integrates health, culture, art, and community service. The campaign will run through the month of October.

Wa-Shokuiku: Learn, Cook, Eat Japanese Online Program
Wa-Shokuiku is a Japanese-inspired food education program created by TABLE FOR TWO. This on-demand online program is designed for high school students and families. Through the course, you can learn the principles of Japanese cuisine and food culture, and gain the skills to prepare healthy nutritious foods to strengthen bodies and minds.

Global Classrooms DC
Program Dates: SY2020-21 
Global Classrooms DC (GCDC) is the flagship global education program of the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA). The program strives to create the global citizens of tomorrow by working with students from grades 5 to 12 and equipping them with the necessary tools and skills to be able to debate and discuss UN-related issues. GCDC provides an engaging curriculum centered on debate-style mini Model UN simulations. The program hosts two Model UN Conferences during the school year, as well as engagements with UN agencies and international affairs experts. GCDC curriculum, materials, and programming will be available virtually for online teaching. GCDC participation is offered at no cost to DC classrooms.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS  

SPICE: Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP)
Program Dates: Feb-June, 2021
Application Deadline: Oct 16, 2020
This is a highly prestigious online course for high school students offered by Stanford University's Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI). The RSP will select 25-30 exceptional students from across the US to engage in intensive study of Japan, with a special focus on the US-Japan relationship. Students hear from experts in the field, and interact with Japanese high school students. Students must attend 10 "virtual classes," complete weekly assignments, an independent research project, and community presentations. Those who complete the course will earn Stanford Continuing Studies Program (CSP) credit and a Certificate of Completion from SPICE, Stanford University. Tuition is $400, but tuition waivers are available.

Local Letters for Global Change: A Pulitzer Center Writing Contest 
Deadline: November 13, 2020
The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting announces its 2020 Letter-Writing Contest. Make your voice heard this election by writing a letter to a local elected representative that explains the global issue you want them to prioritize. Make your case using Pulitzer reporting. This contest is open to current K-12 students in the US or abroad. Click here for the contest guidelines and support materials. LearnServe Fellows 
Program Dates: September 24, 2020-March 18, 2021

Are you a high school student eager to change the world? Join other teens from across the DMV to launch a social venture to tackle one of the most pressing social issues, like racial justice, climate change, mental health, or human rights. LearnServe is seeking dedicated 9th-12th graders from public, charter, and independent schools in DC, Maryland and Virginia. LearnServe Fellows meet weekly on Thursdays; the program is 100% virtual this year. Students can earn up to 50 community service hours. Enrollment fee is $350. Financial aid available up to 100%.

SPICE: Sejong Korean Scholars Program (SKSP)
Program Dates: February-June 2021
Application Deadline: Oct 16, 2020
The Sejong Korea Scholars Program (SKSP) is an intensive online course for high school students, sponsored by the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE). The SKSP annually selects 15-20 exceptional high school students from throughout the US. Designed as a college-level overview of Korean history and culture, this course allows serious students to engage in guided study of Korea directly with leading scholars, former diplomats, and other experts. Tuition for the program is $1,000, but financial aid is available.

National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) 
Program Dates: Summer 2021 and 2021-22 School Year
Application Deadline: November 5, 2020
This is a HUGE opportunity for high school students who want to stand out in the crowd!! The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) is the US State Department funded program which provides American high school students with opportunities to study less commonly taught critical languages in overseas academic settings for free. Full merit-based scholarships are available to study overseas for summer (6-8 weeks long) and academic year programs in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish. School-year (including gap year) programs are also available. NSLI-Y Scholars participate in intensive language classes, home stays, cultural experiences, and volunteer projects. These are EXCELLENT opportunities for students to get started on learning a critical language that will be extremely useful in their future college and career plans. Applicants must be US citizens, with at least a 2.5 GPA, and 15-18 years of age at the start of the program. Previous language study is not required.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange  
Program Dates: 2020-21 School Year
Application Deadline: December 1, 2020
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program offers American high school students the opportunity to live and study abroad in Germany for a full academic year through joint sponsorship by the US Congress and the German Bundestag. This fully funded program includes cultural immersion through living with a host family and attending a German high school; intensive language course upon arrival in Germany; meetings with German and US government officials; and cultural excursions. Eligible students must be US citizens, aged 15-18, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. CIEE administers the selection process and the program for Washington, DC.

Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES Abroad) Program
Program Dates: 2021-22 School Year 
Application Deadline: Dec 8, 2020 
The Kennedy-Lugar YES Abroad Program, sponsored by the US State Department, offers American high school students and recent graduates full merit-based scholarships to live and study for one academic year in countries of strategic importance. For SY2020-21, students may live in one of the following countries: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Morocco, North Macedonia, the Philippines, Senegal, Thailand, and Turkey. The program includes home stay and high school experiences that are intended to increase mutual understanding between American youth and young people abroad, and to deepen appreciation for religious diversity. Participants also gain valuable immersion in a less commonly taught language. Applicants must be US citizens, 15-18 years of age, and in high school at the time of application.
