For American Catholics especially people of Mexican descent, December 12 is the celebration of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. The feast commemorates her December 9–12, 1531 appearances to St. Juan Diego, the Náhuatl-Aztec who had recently converted to Christianity, whose own tilma or cloak bore the miraculous imprint of her image, the indigenous mestiza clothed with the sun and wearing the cinta, the band of pregnancy, standing on the moon, head bowed and hands folded in prayer, and an angel present.

As we continue to minister to our Hispanic brothers and sisters during the Pandemic, this feast takes on a special meaning for us at CTK and St. Stephen. We will celebrate the feast with all the solemnity at the 5pm Mass this Saturday December 12^th with Mariachis and other added festivities. After the mass, the Mariachi and the musicians will continue to perform.

The Virgin of Guadalupe belongs in a particular way to our Advent preparations because, like Mary herself in her great New Testament hymn of God’s praise, the Magnificat, she proclaims to us the Gospel, the Good News of our salvation in Christ, the Good News of God who scatters the proud, exalts the lowly, fills the hungry with good things, and remembers his promises to Abraham and his children forever. The great New Testament scholar, the late Raymond Brown, once wrote:

We have aligned ourselves with the hundreds of people peacefully protesting racial injustice. We have stood for life in its myriad forms and stages. Lest we become complacent, Paul offers us a reality check. “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks . . . for the One who calls you is faithful and God will accomplish it.” 

This Friday we will livestream the Advent Reconciliation at 7.00pm and then do in-person reconciliation on Saturday at 10.30am at St. Stephen and 3.00pm at CTK. Confessions will take place outdoors observing all protocols. If you feel you need to shelter in place, stay home, and make the examination of conscience and do a genuine act of contrition. You can make your reconciliation at a future date when everything is safe. There will be no counseling whatsoever given during the confession, so as to minimize exposure. You confess your sins and the priest will give you absolution. As a parish we will do a common penance. In the footsteps of our Blessed Mother of Guadalupe, do an act of kindness or mercy to someone during the weekend.

Now that the weather is colder and it is getting darker earlier, we have decided to change the time of our Saturday evening outdoor mass to 4pm, beginning Sunday, Dec. 19. Thank you as we continue to navigate through these changing times.

The Filipino Society of Christ the King invites you to join in the celebration of "Simbang Gabi", a nine-day novena in preparation for the birth of Jesus, at Christ the King Church from December 15th to the 23rd.

Mass begins at 6:30 p.m. every night (except Dec. 19 and 20, which will start at 4 p.m. and Thursday, Dec. 17 at 6pm). Because of limitations brought on by Covid-19, masses will be held outdoors inside a large tent and will be live streamed.
