News You Can Use
September 2021 | Volume 13, Issue 1
Greetings!

I hope this newsletter finds you and your loved ones doing well. It has been a long time since we’ve sent an update so we hope you’ll continue reading to learn more about what we’ve been up to and what we have planned.

First, I have to tell you how proud I am of the efforts by our volunteers and employees to ensure the patients we serve are getting the best care possible. With many of the staff dealing with their own personal challenges, they have still taken every opportunity to learn about the needs of our patients and worked together with many community partners to support them. We don’t have a solution for everything, but as patients open up to us about what is holding them back from being as healthy and well as they desire, we are so happy to help them set goals and find resources to make improvements in their lives. It may be by teaching about lung function and the impact of tobacco during a spirometry test that leads someone to quit smoking; by labeling medication containers and a calendar with colored dots to help someone with low literacy take their medications correctly; by talking enough to identify triggers for binge eating to reduce an unhealthy weight; by giving a patient access to a computer to download their tax return so we can apply for a patient assistance program to obtain lifesaving insulin; or the hundreds of other actions that occur every day. It takes many hands and minds to make these improvements, and much hard work on the part of the patient, and we are very thankful for each of you. Each improved health outcome is a major celebration at New Hope Clinic!

We even had a new batch of volunteers who answered the call to help alongside long-term volunteers when we were selected as one of the county’s early covid-19 vaccine administration sites in February. These new volunteers made countless outreach calls, completed massive amounts of data entry, and worked outside in all the elements to smooth the vaccination process for many community members. Thank you!

We had all looked forward to getting back to more in person activities for the Clinic this year like fundraising events, volunteer group trainings, and group health education. But alas, we have opted for safety and postponed the Go Jump in the Lake 5k and Art with Heart fundraisers. We will, however, continue with virtual education sessions, and online fundraising. We are so thankful that our supporters, both long-term and brand-new, have remembered New Hope Clinic in their giving, even if we haven’t seen each other!

We are so fortunate to have you as part of the New Hope Clinic network and look forward to how much more we can do together for the health of our community in the future!

Best Regards,

Sheila Roberts

Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Greg McIntyre
our Newest Volunteer

The New Hope Clinic would like to introduce our newest volunteer to our team, Greg McIntyre. Greg has been with us for four months now and works in the patient intake area. He not only feels as though this gives him the opportunity to give back to the community, but also a chance to help individuals gain control of their health for better living.

From the Northern Virginia area, Greg has been married for 31 years to a retired elementary school teacher named Louann. They have six grown children and 18 grandchildren. Along with gardening and frequent travels around the States, Greg's 32 member family get together once a year either at the lake or ocean.

After 40 years as Vice President of Sales for one of the larges vehicle fleet management companies in the U.S, Greg retired to Brunswick County about five years ago where he spends his days volunteering in the medical field as an EMT and at New Hope Clinic. He looks for opportunities where he can give back to our community and make a difference in people’s lives. "That’s what I found volunteering at New Hope Clinic. If you are going to volunteer, you want to have the best team around you and leadership that is professional and inspiring."

Greg is excited to be part of our team as he believes strongly in the objectives of New Hope Clinic and how it can benefit our community. Please join us in welcoming Greg to the team and please be sure to introduce yourself when you see him around the Clinic.
Healthy Tips for the Fall

The days are getting shorter and the splendor of the bright reds, oranges and yellows from our trees will start decorating our area. Below are some Health Tips to help you have a happy, healthy and fulfilling Autumn.

  • Wash Your Hands: Keep the viruses at bay by washing your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds with soap and clean running water.
  • Wear Your Face Mask: Protect others as well as yourself by wearing a face mask anytime you around others outside of your household.
  • Flu Shot: The best preventative method to abstain for getting the flu is getting your flu shot annually, especially if you feel you are compromised.
  • Social Distancing: Staying six feet away from others in public is a great way of keeping those nasty germs from causing you any harm.
  • Brush and Floss Your Teeth: At least twice a day brush AND floss your teeth with fluoride toothpaste. Keeping your teeth makes for a healthy life.
  • Beneficial Sleep: At least seven hours of sleep is recommended every night. Make sure you have a comfortable and clean bed, buffered by light and noise, so as to get the best rest you can possibly get each night.
  • Drink Water Frequently: Staying away from non-sugar, non-caffeinated, non-alcohol beverages is par for your best health.
  • Sun Safety: By wearing a hat, sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts/pants and applying sunblock (at least SPF15) on sunny days is the best way to protect your skin against harmful UV rays from the Sun.
  • Keep Moving: Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk your dog more often, do exercises at home, anything that keeps you moving is always the healthy alternative.
  • Healthy Eating: Choose the fruit or vegetable snack food over fast food or those candy bars and chips. Your body will thank you for it.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy remainder of 2021.

Our Mission

COVID Vaccines and Testing

COVID infection levels in Brunswick County are at an all-time high, including for vaccinated individuals. 100 patients a day are testing positive for COVID in Brunswick County. The number is likely higher, as some people with symptoms choose not to get tested. Remember, the shot protects you from serious disease - not necessarily infection. An infected person who was vaccinated or previously infected can spread the virus, though likely for much shorter time than an unvaccinated COVID victim.

If you or your family member develops cough, congestion, muscle aches, loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, or fever, then get tested, even if fully vaccinated. Getting tested can help you avoid spreading COVID to family, friends and loved ones. It can also help you avoid being hospitalized. For patients at higher risk of complications from infection we will get you the monoclonal antibody infusion treatment, or have your doctor look here (https://covid.infusioncenter.org/) to find a site with this treatment. To find a testing site near you, visit https://covid19.ncdhhs.gov/about-covid-19/testing/find-my-testing-place, or we can test NHC patients at the Clinic.

Vaccines remain your best protection against serious disease and death. It is safe to get COVID immunizations and flu shots (or other immunizations) together. We have Moderna vaccine available at NHC. We have now been approved to provide a 3rd dose of Moderna covid-19 vaccine to people who are immunocompromised. For a definition of who qualifies, visit the CDC website. (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/recommendations/immuno.html) Our current guidance also has us preparing to provide a 3rd dose of vaccine for the general population, after September 20th, when 8 months have passed since the individual’s second dose. This is still pending FDA and CDC approval. We will prioritize our patients for vaccines, but will help others as our appointments allow. Call no sooner than two weeks before you are eligible and we will add you to our waiting list. To find another vaccine site near you, visit https://covid19.ncdhhs.gov/vaccines.
