Principal's Message

I know this was a stressful week for many as we were reminded that we're not exempt from COVID-19 in our community. At school, we're using this as a reminder for staff and students about the importance of our safety procedures and constantly practicing and revisiting our rules. We always appreciate the support of parents and caregivers in our community in reminding students about school expectations, especially if they may differ from what is comfortable for families outside of school.

Next week, we jump into our fall assessment window. We'll be administering a variety of assessments in the coming month. More details are provided below.

L'Shana Tova to all who celebrate this weekend!

Warmly,
Ginny

Fall Assessment News
As shared previously, this year, all 2nd through 5th graders will take the MAP Reading and Math assessments this fall. The window begins next week for in-person students (see dates below). RLA students will also take MAP this fall. We'll also be reading with students using a common assessment tool to gauge approximate reading levels and areas of strength and for development. Our K and 1st students will be working with teachers 1:1 with the AIMSWeb+ benchmark assessment tool in both math and reading. All of these data points are joined together with the wealth of knowledge we're collecting about students in class to help teachers make instructional decisions. Please contact your child's teacher with any questions.

In-person MAP testing schedule:
5th grade: 9/22 & 9/24
4th grade: 9/25 & 9/30
3rd grade: 10/2 & 10/7
2nd grade: 10/9 & 10/13

Halloween Update
Unfortunately, due to social distancing restrictions, we will be unable to hold our annual Halloween parade around the neighborhood. We'll be sharing more information about Halloween in the coming weeks.

Need Another Mask Lanyard? *repeat*
Thanks to our awesome PTO, all students were provided with a Greenbriar mask lanyard at the start of this year. We have additional lanyards available for purchase in the Greenbriar office if your child lost his/hers or if you'd like a second one. You can send cash or check, made out to Greenbriar School for $3 to purchase a second lanyard for your child. Lanyards are available while supplies last!

Next Library Materials Checkout Oct. 7

Please pull up along Greenbriar Lane, heading northbound and you'll see our volunteers along the sidewalk by the back parking lot. Look for more information from your child’s teacher(s) regarding what materials will be included in the pickup. Your child can also return library books, original iPad cases (5th and 6th grade) or other materials on October 7.
MAP Assessment Information for 2nd-5th Grade Parents
RLA students in 2nd - 5th grade will be taking the MAP assessment September 29 - October 23. While we’ve been administering MAP in our district for many years, this is the first time we’ll administer MAP remotely so we wanted to provide some insights to you as RLA parents.

A computer-adaptive test like MAP adjusts the difficulty of questions as a child works on the test. Most students will get about half the questions right and half wrong. This means that your child may see questions about content he or she has not seen before or been taught. Please know this is supposed to happen with MAP. As a parent, it might be hard to watch your child get answers wrong on a test, but to accurately reflect your child’s strengths and to help your child’s teacher know what he/she needs to learn next, please don’t step in and help your child with answers. The most important thing you can do is ask your children to do their best and reassure them that there are questions about concepts they haven’t learned yet, but will soon!
