CONSTRUCTION ADVISORY September 8, 2021

Overnight girder installation Platte Avenue over Sand Creek bridge September 9 - 10 Construction is in progress to replace the eastbound and westbound bridges on Platte Avenue over Sand Creek between Wooten Road and the Powers Boulevard Interchange to improve safety. Girder Installation The Platte Avenue over Sand Creek project will be installing girders September 9 - 10 as part of the bridge replacement, weather and resource dependent. To lessen traffic impacts, the installation is scheduled to happen overnight, with traffic detoured each night of the installation, 8 p.m. through 5 a.m.

Traffic Impacts September 9 and 10  Platte Avenue eastbound will be closed overnight September 9 and 10, 8 p.m. - 5 a.m and Platte Avenue westbound will be reduced to one lane September 9 only, 8 p.m. - 5 a.m. at Wooten Road to the Powers Interchange for girder erection / installation activities, resource and weather dependent. Traffic (including bicyclists and pedestrians) on Platte Avenue will be detoured each night Thursday and Friday September 9 and 10, 8 p.m. - 5 a.m. Traffic (including bicyclists and pedestrians) on Platte Avenue will detour at Wooten Road north to Galley Road, then east on Galley Road to the Powers Interchange. All business access will remain open throughout construction. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes when possible.

Through August, crews from Lawrence Construction have poured nearly 440 cubic yards of concrete along with installing over 114,000 lbs. of reinforcing steel on the new bridge. One entire bridge with tons of asphalt, concrete and steel was removed utilizing hydraulic excavators. Crews have installed approximately six miles of wick drains, moved 4,000 cubic yards of embankment fill into place and put down just over 3,000 square yards of asphalt pavement on the approach to the new bridge. The project is expected to be completed by Fall 2022, weather and resource dependent.

Background The bridges are approaching the end of their service life (built in 1956), suffering from prior flood damage (2008) and overall degradation of the structures. The project will replace the two separate bridges with one bridge structure. The project will also add sidewalks along the north and south sides of Platte Avenue over the creek to accommodate the future Sand Creek Regional Trail under the Platte Avenue bridge. Platte Avenue is one of the city’s main east/west mobility corridors and the new bridge will accommodate future growth along the corridor by providing additional lanes on Platte Avenue, along with signalizing the intersection at Space Center Drive. Funding for the project totals approximately $14 million, funded in part by the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority and a federal grant.
