The West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood is a U.S. Department of Education funded grant to support "cradle-to-career" opportunities for children living or going to school in Belmont, East Parkside, Mantua, Mill Creek, Powelton Village, and West Powelton / Saunders Park. The program seeks to improve education, health, and economic success for children, their families and the community.

What if I requested a mail-in or absentee ballot?

If you already submitted a mail-in or absentee ballot, you cannot vote at your polling place on election day.

If you did not return your mail-in or absentee ballot and you want to vote in person, you have two options:
- Bring your ballot and the pre-addressed outer return envelope to your polling place to be voided. After you surrender your ballot and envelope and sign a declaration, you can then vote a regular ballot.

If you don't surrender your ballot and return envelope, you can only vote by provisional ballot at your polling place. Your county board of elections will then verify that you did not vote by mail before counting your provisional ballot.

Access Centers: Providing Families without Childcare a Safe Space for Digital Learning |
|
Access Centers provide Philadelphia’s most vulnerable students with a safe place for digital learning when caregivers work outside the home and have no childcare supports. Registration is required
The staff at these centers:
- Supervise students during digital learning time.
- Provide meals.
- Run activities.
Access Centers are:

Throughout September and October, Fab Youth Philly's Play Captains visited the playground at 37th & Mt. Vernon where they facilitated playful learning activities and arts and crafts for children and adults. Some weeks, partners stopped by to hand out resources and materials as well. Thank you to these "fab" teens who created a fun, safe, environment this fall for families in West Philly. |

Find Your Fit: 2020-21 School Selection ends Friday 11/6 |

Every student is assigned a neighborhood school, from K-12, based on where they live. But if you are interested in any other school in the District, all you have to do is apply!
Families and students can access the online application to submit requests for the the school or schools you’d most like to attend. The application process will close November 6, 2020.

The Promise Neighborhood has been working with the City to identify and share out resources for free food in West Philadelphia near the heart of the uprising. We have heard from our families that food access is a challenge as stores have been boarded up. Click in the google doc for up to date locations for food assistance.

The City of Philadelphia announced PHLConnectED, to help ensure all Philadelphia students have internet access for this coming school year and beyond.

Heating Assistance / LIHEAP
The 2020-2021 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is now open!
The season is scheduled to close on April 9, 2021.
About the Program
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps families living on low incomes pay their heating bills in the form of a cash grant. Households in immediate danger of being without heat can also qualify for crisis grants. The cash grant is a one-time payment sent directly to the utility company/fuel provider to be credited on your bill. These grants range from $200 to $1,000 based on household size, income, and fuel type. Remember: This is a grant and does not have to be repaid.
How to apply
There are two ways to apply for LIHEAP:

PEC's Homelessness Prevention Grant Program |
|
One time grant for families at risk of homelessness for past due rent OR security deposit, first and last month's rent for new housing.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
·Must have children under 18
·Must be at risk of losing your current housing OR living in housing that is otherwise unstable or unsafe
·Must not have resources available to secure new housing
·Must not be receiving any other public rental assistance
·Must be able to maintain your housing after receiving this grant
·For past-due rent:
Must have a year-long lease with a licensed landlord (unless lease converted to monthly after it came to term)
For security/first/last for a new apartment:
Lease must be for one year with a licensed landlord

The City of Philadelphia's Reading and Literacy Day Event was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Neighborhoods across the city pivoted to come up with creative ideas to protect, celebrate, and encourage children's literacy this fall.
The West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood Initiative in partnership with Action for Early Learning, Reading Recycled and AFEL’s Family Ambassadors from People’s Emergency Center, participated in Read by Fourth’s citywide Reading Promise Literacy Day on Saturday, October 17. At the heart of the Promise Neighborhood’s Reading Promise Project was the establishment of permanent Sidewalk Libraries, recycled newspaper boxes courtesy of Reading Recycled, set up at five locations around the Promise Zone filled with 50 books each:
· 42nd and Ogden
· 42nd Street Playground, East Parkside
· Mill Creek Playground
· 324 Holly Street
· 37th and Mt. Vernon Playground
At each site on Literacy Day, local authors read their books to groups of children. Each book was chosen to reflect the culture of the neighborhood and to make sure our children see themselves on every page. Books included The Meteorologist in Me, by local NBC10 meteorologist, Brittney Shipp, who autographed every book; The Chase Books, by John W. Butler III, who teaches at Belmont Middle School; and My Mommy's Khimar by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow. Also, City Councilwoman Jamie Gauthier stopped by the Mt. Vernon Playground to read to the children!
Each child also received a warm boxed lunch and two bags of literacy rich materials, including six books, a tee shirt, hand sanitizer and a child's mask as well as a Learning Kit, with education and craft supplies donated by PNC Grow Up Great.
