Curtner Elementary Report focuses on supporting students, enhancing school spirit
Principal Raquel Kusunoki and the Curtner Elementary School team updated the Board and community with a report centered around Strategic Goal #4: Focus services and support systems to ensure that all students are engaged in their learning and are making social, emotional, and academic gains.

Kusunoki was joined by staff secretary Jessica Antolin, who shared that Curtner's absentee rate stood at 16.2 percent (with 57 independent studies requests) as of Dec. 14. "This is due to diligence and just reaching out to parents and students," Antolin added. "Our teachers are so supportive. We can drop these numbers even lower."

Third-grade teacher Samantha Brazil shared a snapshot into how teachers are supporting students since they returned to the physical campus. Curtner staff has been modeling how to independently problem solve; using explicit expectations through SEAL (Social Emotional Aspects of Learning) in primary grades 1-3; offering 1-2 SEL (Social Emotional Learning) mini-lessons per week; and utilizing school-wide guided reading and targeting students with their reading specialist.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) Teacher Caroline Younan has been focusing on student mindset in addition to creativity and problem solving through STEAM lessons. "I always try to encourage them to persevere and do their best," she shared.

Along with a parent leader, a trio of Curtner student council representatives also shared what they've been doing to rekindle school spirit through spirit days, trivia nights, and costume contests. The student council has been keeping families engaged and promoting a feeling of togetherness this year. Additionally, students have raised about $2,000 and collected 5,000 cans for the Jack Emery Drive.

MUSD expands interdistrict transfers to allow for students of those who work in Milpitas
MUSD's Learning & Development Team introduced an enhanced enrollment regulation that now extends the opportunity for interdistrict transfer to MUSD schools to local businesses.

Children of workers in local businesses who reside outside of district boundaries may enroll in MUSD schools on a space available basis, after Milpitas residents, followed by consideration for children of MUSD employees, and then those of individuals employed by the City of Milpitas. Businesses that become members of the MUSD Alliance Partners for Future Ready Learners would be considered first before other corporations and small businesses.

Added to Administrative Regulation 5117 is: "Employees of local businesses/corporations and their children who meet the criteria outlined in the interdistrict contract will be exempt on a space-available basis after consideration for employees of the District and City of Milpitas have been made."
