UN Food Summit targets ending hunger, creating resiliency
The United Nations Food Systems Summit kicked off Thursday, setting the stage for global collaboration to eliminate hunger and build a more sustainable, resilient food supply. Leaders on the world stage offered big promises, but the United States promised $10 billion will still need to be approved by Congress. Rather than a list of dos and don'ts on what agriculture can do to meet the daunting challenges of improving food security as well as addressing climate impacts, political ag leaders offered a path forward that includes coalitions and the understanding that there are multiple ways to improve food supply chain resiliency.

Can sustainability standards effectively mitigate
food system challenges?
While agrifood production is essential for feeding our growing global population, it allegedly contributes to environmental and social problems, including deforestation, biodiversity loss, poor or precarious labor conditions, and persistent poverty. Certification and standards can encourage use of sustainable production practices, but how effective are such programs in addressing food system challenges? A new study from a team of international researchers reviews the literature on sustainability standards and identifies a series of important questions.
