Ontario Building Trades double down on OH&S
The coronavirus pandemic has created a watershed moment for occupational health and safety in the province, delegates attending the recent Ontario Building Trades conference were told. On one hand delegates were told of a spike in deaths and critical injuries at construction worksites last year that was characterized as “carnage,” and on the other the urgent need to build upon lessons learned during the pandemic.
The first resolution passed by delegates attending the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario conference in Toronto called for the installation of an independent officer for occupational health and safety (OHS),

Burlington planning development around transit stations
The City of Burlington is holding a series of virtual meetings to collect input on the Aldershot, Appleby and Burlington GO Major Transit Station Areas (MTSAs) before creating development plans for areas around transit..
The goal is to build complete communities close to transit, services and amenities by locating more people and jobs within about a ten-minute walk of the GO stations. Councillors say the focus on development near transit will also help the city respond to climate change by providing more sustainable options for travel.

Brandt boasts Canada’s largest equipment dealer network after acquisition
Regina-based Brandt Tractor Ltd., a subsidiary of the Brandt Group of Companies, has wrapped up its acquisition of Cervus Equipment Corp.
The completion of this deal gives Brandt the largest equipment deal network in Canada, adding 64 new agriculture, transportation, and material handling equipment locations across Canada, Australia and New Zealand.The all-cash deal was endorsed by 97.66 per cent of Cervus shareholders.
Brandt was already the largest John Deere dealership in the world, and this move solidifies its position through greater market penetration and expanded geographical reach.

First of two U of T towers rises, creating Canada’s largest innovation centre
Asmall army of skilled trades and contractors are working on building the first of two towers that will make up the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre at the University of Toronto (U of T).
Construction of the 12-storey structure, with two mechanical penthouse floors, is pressing ahead with concrete slabs and vertical walls being installed on the upper floors. Simultaneously, rough-ins for the mechanical and electrical systems along with drywall framing have started on the lower floors. The structure is being built on the north side of College Street east of Queen’s Park Crescent. Presently, trades are working on building the eighth and ninth floors.

Timber, carbon sequestering concrete future of green construction
As anyone journeying through Canada’s major cities can attest, the country continues to go through a construction boom despite the ongoing pandemic. Construction cranes dot most cityscapes, marking the erection of condo and apartment buildings, even the odd office tower.
To the average observer, the skeletal frames of these buildings look pretty much the same as they did 10 or 20 years ago: A frame of steel girders armoured in poured concrete.

RFPs issued for South Niagara Hospital project
Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Niagara Health have invited three teams to respond to a request for proposals (RFP) to design, build, finance and maintain the South Niagara Hospital project.
The three teams were shortlisted based on criteria identified in a request for qualifications process that began in February 2021. Selection criteria included design and construction capability, experience, qualified personnel and financial capacity to deliver a project of this size and scope.
