2021 Plans
2020 has been a challenging year, but with God’s help, we have made it. God has been faithful to us, and we look forward to what God has in store for us, with your help, in 2021. To allow as many of you as possible to participate, and because our in-person numbers are limited, we are making some changes to our normal business schedule for next year.
First, we will not hold our annual congregational meeting in January as we normally do. We are moving the date to Sunday, June 6, 2021, following the 9:00 worship service. At the meeting, we will review the church’s financial reports, vote on the terms of call for the pastor, and convene a meeting of the corporation. Making every effort at transparency, we will send out regular financial reports at the end of next month, but formal review, questions, etc., will wait for the congregational meeting in June.
Second, Holston Presbytery has granted us a one-year waiver to the Book of Order’s mandate to elect new officers. This means that all our officers who agree to do so will have their term extended one year. For example, an officer in the class of 2020 will become a member of the class of 2021. In the final quarter of 2021, we will nominate officers for election, then elect them in January 2022, effectively correcting the normal succession of officer classes.
Given the uncertainties surrounding the novel coronavirus, this approach allows us to take up the vital business of the church at a time when more people will be comfortable with in-person meetings. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to share them with Pastor Sam.

Prayers for Pastor Dave and Linda
We ask that you keep Pastor Dave and Linda in your prayers. They both came down with covid-19 over the weekend and are quarantining at home, per health department rules. Your prayers and encouragement are coveted, and we look forward to the day when they have recovered and are healthy again!

Christmas Eve Events
One of the longstanding traditions of our church is to hold a candlelight service on Christmas Eve. For many, this is our most beautiful service of the year, and evokes memories of years past.
It is also one of the largest services we hold all year, making in-person worship an impossibility during this pandemic. It is with great sadness that church leadership has decided not to hold in-person services on Christmas Eve this year, opting instead to stream a service at 7:30 p.m. We do this out of care and concern for our community, especially our brothers and sisters who would normally gather at this time. We will have the service ready for its premiere in advance of the date and time on our YouTube and Facebook sites.
However, we recognize that gathering, in some fashion, is important. Therefore, we will hold an outdoor caroling and hymn sing on Christmas Eve at 5:15 p.m. We will gather outside the front doors of the church, worshiping God in song in a responsible, socially distanced manner. We ask that everyone bundle up, wear a mask, and bring a heart longing to worship.

On-Site Sunday Classes for Adults
Two classes for adults meet at the church during the Sunday School hour. The first, facilitated by Nancy Allerton, meets in room 123 and is now reading the Book of Numbers. The second, facilitated by Matt Richardson, meets in room 167 and is discussing the Gospel of John. Both classes welcome adults whenever they are able to attend.

Study the Bible Online
We offer two adult studies on our YouTube channel. The Sunday Bible study, Praying With the Psalms, looks at the Book of Psalms through the lens of prayer. We also post a short study every Wednesday. If you subscribe, you will be notified when new studies become available.

Zoom In on Second Saturday Circles
Our program of Faith and Fellowship for Women continues. Heart to Heart invites the women of the church to share Bible study, discussion, and prayer Saturday, December 12, at 10:00 a.m. on Zoom. If you don’t know how to Zoom, we’d love to help you!
The Second Saturday topic for December is Incarnation, the mystery of God becoming human. God’s incarnation in the person of Jesus Christ, the babe in the manger, is what we are intended to celebrate at Christmas. Frederick Buechner wrote that if our minds have not been blown by the concept of the Incarnation (this scandalous idea of “a God-man”), “then we have not taken it as seriously as it demands to be taken.” Together on December 12 we will begin to explore this concept and its practical implications for our daily lives.
Join the Zoom meeting here. The meeting ID is 589 413 0292 and the passcode is Hope.

We Are Praying Together
We are asking all members of our congregation to join our 7-12-7 Prayer Campaign. Please choose the time convenient for you (7:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., or 7:00 p.m.) and join us daily in prayer. Together we will ask for God’s guidance, deliverance, and mercy for our church, community, nation, and world. If you cannot pray at those hours, please pray when you can! We are facing great challenges, but God is greater still.

Organist’s Footnotes
“Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah,” Sunday’s prelude, was written by Wayne L. Wold (b. 1954). It is based on his hymn of the same name, which reads: “Light one candle to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. He shall bring salvation to Israel, God fulfils the promise. Light two candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. He shall feed the flock like a shepherd, gently lead them homeward. Light three candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. Lift your heads and lift high the gateway for the King of Glory. Light four candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. He is coming, tell the glad tidings. Let your lights be shining!” The tune comes from a Yiddish love song. Wold has cleverly arranged his organ piece in the style of a famous piece by César Franck. I decided to exploit the Yiddish character of this music by performing it with solo violin and piano. Wold is Professor and Chair of the Music Department, Concert Manager, and College Organist at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland.
Charles Gounod (1818– 1893) devised a melody and superimposed it on the C Major Prelude (BWV 846) from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1 of J.S. Bach. In 1859 Gounod fitted the words of the “Ave Maria” on to his melody. At the violinist’s request, I have composed a variation on his melody, which will be heard for the first time Sunday, during communion. Our violinist is Susan Perkins (pictured), who is Adjunct Faculty at Salem College, where she teaches Alexander Technique and violin. She is also Alexander Technique Instructor in the Drama Department at UNC School of the Arts, Alexander Technique Instructor at Wake Forest University, and violinist in the Winston-Salem Symphony. She lives in Winston Salem, North Carolina, where she maintains a private studio of violin students and a studio of private Alexander Technique clients, and freelances widely.
