Zoom In on Second Saturday Circles
Our program of Faith and Fellowship for Women continues. Heart to Heart invites the women of the church to share Bible study, discussion, and prayer Saturday, December 12, at 10:00 a.m. on Zoom. If you don’t know how to Zoom, we’d love to help you!

The Second Saturday topic for December is Incarnation, the mystery of God becoming human. God’s incarnation in the person of Jesus Christ, the babe in the manger, is what we are intended to celebrate at Christmas. Frederick Buechner wrote that if our minds have not been blown by the concept of the Incarnation (this scandalous idea of “a God-man”), “then we have not taken it as seriously as it demands to be taken.” Together on December 12 we will begin to explore this concept and its practical implications for our daily lives.

Join the Zoom meeting here. The meeting ID is 589 413 0292 and the passcode is Hope.

Please RSVP to Elizabeth Patrick (423-956-9716 or [email protected]), if possible, but join us even if you haven’t replied! For more information, call or text Elizabeth, or see the Heart to Heart Facebook page.
Connect and Communicate
Can you make a quick call once a month to approximately eight members of the church, to see how they’re doing and share what’s new at FPC? If so, please let Dave Welch know. He wants you on this ministry team! Please contact him at [email protected] or 423-764-7176.
We Are Praying Together
We are asking all members of our congregation to join our 7-12-7 Prayer Campaign. Please choose the time convenient for you (7:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., or 7:00 p.m.) and join us daily in prayer. Together we will ask for God’s guidance, deliverance, and mercy for our church, community, nation, and world. If you cannot pray at those hours, please pray when you can! We are facing great challenges, but God is greater still.
Give Safely
During the pandemic, we encourage you to use text, mail, or our website for your continued, faithful support of our ministries. You can give online by going to fpcbristol.org and clicking on “Give” in the upper right corner. You can send your pledge, offering, or special gift by texting fpcbristol to 73256. You can also mail your checks directly to the church. Our address is 701 Florida Avenue, Bristol, TN 37620.
Goldfish for Fairmount Students
We are collecting Goldfish, the little cheese crackers, for the students of our neighborhood school. Please leave your contributions in the corner of the Fellowship Hallway where the little house usually stands. It will return anon. Thank you!
Out for Repairs
Dear Becca Tate has mercifully stepped up and taken the little red house away for repairs. Until it returns, you can place your donations to the Fairmount snack program or the food pantry in the corner of the Fellowship Hallway where it usually resides. Keep an eye out for the rehab!

Organist’s Footnotes
“Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah,” Sunday’s prelude, was written by Wayne L. Wold (b. 1954). It is based on his hymn of the same name, which reads: “Light one candle to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. He shall bring salvation to Israel, God fulfils the promise. Light two candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. He shall feed the flock like a shepherd, gently lead them homeward. Light three candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. Lift your heads and lift high the gateway for the King of Glory. Light four candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. He is coming, tell the glad tidings. Let your lights be shining!” The tune comes from a Yiddish love song. Wold has cleverly arranged his organ piece in the style of a famous piece by César Franck. I decided to exploit the Yiddish character of this music by performing it with solo violin and piano. Wold is Professor and Chair of the Music Department, Concert Manager, and College Organist at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland.

Charles Gounod (1818– 1893) devised a melody and superimposed it on the C Major Prelude (BWV 846) from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1 of J.S. Bach. In 1859 Gounod fitted the words of the “Ave Maria” on to his melody. At the violinist’s request, I have composed a variation on his melody, which will be heard for the first time Sunday, during communion. Our violinist is Susan Perkins (pictured), who is Adjunct Faculty at Salem College, where she teaches Alexander Technique and violin. She is also Alexander Technique Instructor in the Drama Department at UNC School of the Arts, Alexander Technique Instructor at Wake Forest University, and violinist in the Winston-Salem Symphony. She lives in Winston Salem, North Carolina, where she maintains a private studio of violin students and a studio of private Alexander Technique clients, and freelances widely.
