LATEST CITY NEWS & UPDATES
The city of Sterling Heights announces the rollout of a collection of signature events and amenities for the remainder of 2021.

Labeled “Break-Free Blast,” these events and activities are designed for all ages and interests, providing something every resident can enjoy. All activities will be conducted based on current public health guidelines at the time they occur.

“Although there are still protocols we’ll need to continue following to keep our community safe, the magnitude of vaccinations being administered every day in our community, coupled with the warming weather, is giving us hope for getting back to fun gatherings and activities very soon,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. “I’m incredibly proud of the way our community has come together over the past year. It really is something worth celebrating, and this is one way of giving our residents something they can look forward to - a bit of an escape from the last 12 months of closures, cancellations and isolation.”

Break-Free Blast events include:
  • Memorial Day – On May 31 at 9 a.m., Sterling Heights will pay tribute to our local veterans with a brief ceremony in front of City Hall including remarks from Sterling Heights elected officials / representative and a special unveiling of the newly renovated City Hall Memorial Garden. Following the ceremony, we’ll take a special multi-vehicle Memorial Day “cruise” in honor of our local heroes along an expanded route. Additional details will be released in early May.

  • Cultural Exchange – On June 18 at 6 p.m. Sterling Heights will celebrate the various cultures that make up the fabric of our community. This year’s event will be held under the Dodge Park Farmers Market and will feature several cultural performances from local groups, ethnic cuisine from a variety of food trucks and special displays featuring the history and traditions of various cultures.

  • Summer Thursdays – From May 27 to September 30, residents will have three opportunities for fun. From 3-8 p.m., the Dodge Park Farmers Market will offer fresh local produce, food trucks and more. Beginning at 5 p.m., Patios ‘n’ Pints across the street offers your favorite local craft brews in a fun, casual atmosphere next to the Upton House Museum. Breweries will rotate each week, and additional beverages will also be available. Then at 7 p.m., Music in the Park will bring live, local music from multiple genres and eras to the Dodge Park Amphitheatre.

  • National Night Out – On Aug. 3 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., residents have an opportunity to share the evening with our local police officers, getting to know then on a personal level. This event held in various communities across the nation is designed to strengthen relationships between police and their community to develop a unified front in fighting crime and keeping our City safe. National Night Out includes games, prizes, a chance to learn more about local public safety organizations and more.

  • (Sterling)Oktoberfest – Due to lingering capacity limits for public gatherings, this year’s Sterlingfest will become Oktoberfest. On Oct. 8 and 9, Dodge Park will feature two national acts on the amphitheatre stage – Plain White T’s on Oct. 8 and Lou Gramm The Original Voice of Foreigner / Asia Featuring John Payne on Oct. 9. In addition, six local favorite musical acts are scheduled for the Beer Pavilion over those two days, and a variety of food trucks will also be on hand just outside the pavilion.

  • Sterling Frights – On Oct. 23, Sterling Heights celebrates the spirit of Halloween with Sterling Frights. The event will include music, games, attractions, food and plenty of photo opportunities – all designed around public health guidelines.

  • A Sterling Christmas – On Dec. 4, Sterling Heights rounds out our Break-Free Blast series of events by celebrating the magic of the season with A Sterling Christmas. The event includes the City’s annual tree lighting highlighted by Santa’s arrival. There will be several activities for all ages as we ring in the holidays.

In addition to scheduled signature events, Break-Free Blast includes multiple seasonal amenities offering the opportunity to walk/run, skate, pedal, paddle or splash. The Sterling Heights Splash Pad is scheduled to be open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Residents and visitors can canoe or kayak the Clinton River from April to October. The Sterling Heights ice rink is open early December to early March, and our skate park and connected public trail system, including respite locations and bike repair stations, are open all year long.

“Break-Free Blast is a way to capture the hope and anticipation of getting back outside and returning to a bit of normalcy,” said Community Relations Director Melanie Davis. “Inside Break-Free Blast is something for everyone – all ages, all interests and from the serious athlete to the casual dog walker and everything in between. We are excited to share these signature events and activities with our community, and we hope they offer our residents a bit of a light at the end of what has been a very long tunnel.”
The city of Sterling Heights, along with partners from Macomb County, Shelby Township, and Silver Pine Family Physicians, officially announced last week that the former Sears automotive center at Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights is now open as the brand new drive-thru vaccination facility!

The speed and uptake of vaccinations are a large factor in determining how quickly we can achieve herd immunity in the United States. Drive-thru vaccination centers are able to vaccinate many more people per hour than walk-up clinics, and once fully operational, City officials believe as many as 2,000 people can be vaccinated per day at this site.

Appointments are required and can be scheduled through the Macomb County website.
The Used, But Sterling Bookstore is coming to Lakeside Mall! Get bargain deals on fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, puzzles, and DVDs on Friday, April 16 through Saturday, April 18 from 1-5 p.m.

The sale will be located at a storefront in the center court area on the first floor.
Sterling Heights Parks and Recreation will be hosting a series of blood drives with Versiti Blood Services at the Community Center each month.

Want to donate blood? Versiti will be back on April 19!

For questions, or to make an appointment, call Kaila at (918) 859-9632.

You can also schedule an appointment on the Versiti website.
In honor of Memorial Day, the city of Sterling Heights is calling all our little artist residents — from kindergarten through sixth grade — to submit a patriotic themed masterpiece thanking our veterans (past and present) for their service! Artwork can be anything on paper: crayons, colored pencils, water colors, etc.

The winner of the art contest will determine the route of our Memorial Day Cruise on Monday, May 31. The cruise will take place at 10 a.m. with modifications in place that meet the current CDC and state guidelines. We will be announcing more information regarding this event soon!

Artwork can be dropped off at the Community Relations Department in City Hall; mailed to 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, Attn: Community Relations or scanned and emailed to: cityhall@sterling-heights.net.

Deadline to submit the artwork is Wednesday, April 28.

Winners will be determined by the Arts Commission members and will be notified in early May.
The city of Sterling Heights is gearing up for our Spring SHINE Day on Saturday, May 1 and will be hosted by First Church of Sterling Heights.

SHINE brings great volunteers together with residents in preparation for the summer season and is a great opportunity for students, family members, organizations and co-workers to get involved with helping out their fellow neighbors!

The citywide cleanup is part of the Sterling Heights Initiative for Neighborhood Excellence (SHINE) program through the Community Relations Department. The SHINE initiative works with schools, churches and residents to provide volunteers for residents who need help with property maintenance because of age, physical disabilities, or financial hardship.

Interested in volunteering? Email dschultz@sterling-height.net or call 586-446-2476.

Volunteers will meet around 9:30 a.m. at First Church of Sterling Heights, located at 39400 Dequindre Rd.

Work assignments will not be longer than 3-4 hours. All materials will be provided to volunteers.

If you are not able to volunteer on May 1 but would like to help with the SHINE program, please email and we can set up a time and day that works best for you!
The Innovate Mound project timeline for the first half of 2021 is as follows:
  • Complete Design (In progress)
  • Choose Contractor and Ombudsman (Late Spring 2021)
  • Finalize Construction Details (Late Spring 2021)
  • Start Construction (Summer 2021)

Completing the Design

One of the most important parts of a project such as this is the design phase – a phase that significant efforts have been put toward thus far.

“Right now, we’ve completed about 30 percent of the new road design,” said Bryan Santo, director of Macomb County Department of Roads. “We’ve done this with input from many residents, businesses, and others who have shared their thoughts and ideas with us.”

The Innovate Mound project is slated to be complete in 2024.
