Southeast Volusia Historical Society

As we enter the fall season, we are starting to welcome back our valuable “snowbird” volunteers. We’re so glad to have them contributing once again to the successful operations of the museum. Cindy and I were also able to spend a month up north, visiting friends and relatives. As we attended a high school get together, we were saddened by the recent death, due to COVID, of one of my former classmates. We have had several cases here as well, affecting museum members and volunteers. At least two of these resulted in stays of several days duration in ICU. Please, please, don’t take this pandemic lightly, it is still going on. If you are hesitant about getting vaccinated, consult your doctors, they are the experts.

A museum improvement we have made just in the last week is the consolidation of two of our rented storage units at one facility into one unit at another, resulting in significant monthly savings. Many thanks to the group of volunteers who put in two days of hard work to make this happen!

As our elevator project continues on, you will notice the great looking roof on the elevator shaft that perfectly compliments the rest of the building. Thanks to Curtis Hodges and crew for their workmanship! As this work continues on (under budget actually), we are expanding the scope to include some other needed improvements as well. Thanks again to our contractor Curtis, our project coordinator Mark Rakowski, and the county ECHO staff.

Here’s hoping everyone has a wonderful (and hurricane free) October!

Gary

Black Mangrove Honey
The Indian River North and Mosquito Lagoon have provided nutrition and livelihoods to many through time, with the bounty of its natural environment playing an important role in local area cultural history.
Black Mangrove honey is one of those special gifts from nature that we are proud to make available here in the museum gift shop.
Considered one of the rarest of honeys with a unique flavor and texture, this honey is harvested directly from the mangrove islands here in Southeast Volusia County's Mosquito Lagoon.
New Smyrna Beach's own Sun Splash Nursery holds the special permit required to place hives on the protected mangrove islands at precisely the right time each year.
We feel confident that you will enjoy it's mild local flavor as much as we do.
Pop by the Museum Gift Shop and pick up your jar today!

1920's Beach Beauty W/Parasol

Featured on an ad for the Florida East Coast Railway and Florida East Coast Hotel Company when Henry Flagler owned both ventures, this lovely lady and a poem called “The Joy of Life” beckoned travelers to get on a train and come to Florida.
The poem wastes no time in telling us what we really need, painting quite a glorious picture of what a visit to Florida will provide for the traveler.
After all, who doesn't long after “scenes you never saw before,    colors, sounds, thrills, and a life as exciting and changeful as a voyage of discovery.”
We are pleased to welcome this lovely lady back to    continue inviting travelers to the East Coast of Florida as she did a hundred years ago.

Order a flour sack tea towel for a friend or for your kitchen featuring this wonderful graphic today for only $10.95
