Chromebook and Materials Distribution - By Appointment Only
Dear Spartan Families,
TJHS will offer additional drive through pick up opportunities for Chromebooks and class materials distribution on Tuesday 9/22 and Thursday 9/24 by appointment only. If you would like to schedule a two-hour pick-up window please fill out our request form herehttps://forms.gle/h381kzTdGeEnXTa46 The request form helps us ensure we have the proper level of staffing to handle demand. If you miss your pickup appointment your items will be returned to stock and you will need to resubmit your request for a future pick-up date.  If you are returning damaged technology please make sure the power cord is returned with the unit. Due to high demand across the district we are out of Wifi Hotspots and don't know when additional units will be made available. In order to comply with Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Denver Public School Nursing Services, we ask that families remain in their cars at all times in order to practice social distancing and allow TJ staff to deliver the items to your car. (See map below) We will place it in the trunk, backseat or hand it through a window. If you are on foot or bike please wear a mask and maintain 6-feet of distance from other people. TJ staff will be wearing masks for everyone's protection. If you have any questions please email [email protected].

Estimadas familias espartanas,

TJ JROTC Helping in the Communities
September is National Suicide Awareness Month, and truly every day should be about suicide prevention.

Each year the JROTC program executes several service learning projects. The purpose of service learning is to educate students, give back to others, and help our community. This year we are bringing awareness to veteran suicides, and roughly 22 veterans commit suicide each day in this country. That means, on average, we are losing 9,000 military veterans a year to suicide. These are men and women who volunteered, served and fought for the freedoms we enjoy here in the United States of America. When veterans come home, we as a country are not providing help and supportive service needed for them. We as a country need to do better. We need to do better at providing the services they deserve and need?

So we ask you to do your part and respect veterans, thank them, and let them know you care. JROTC raised over $1,000.00 for the Pikes Peak Veteran's Suicide Prevention Project through "22 A Day" t-shirt sales and we will be displaying photos and videos on our TJ JROTC website and other social media. Please help us raise awareness for this worthy cause throughout September and beyond. If you are interested in a t-shirt please email MAJ Campbell at [email protected]. We will continue to sell shirts until we have exhausted our supply.

We are here for you and you are not alone.

Community Resources for Advisement
Hello TJ,

As you may have seen in the news the past couple weeks, students around DPS have been asking for more education and resources regarding healthy relationships and gender violence protection. At TJ our Challenge 5280 Club has been working this exact topic the past two years. As part of the Challenge 5280 club's work we have partnered with several community resources to educate our kids and keep them safe. With our new advisement class offered daily we are going to spend the next two weeks focusing in on the following topics:

During Advisement Week of 21st:
-          We have asked experts from END Violence, Denver Health and the District Attorney's Office to come in to Advisement and be part of a panel for students (more info on speakers below).
-          Questions will be submitted before so there are talking points for them, if student's do not feel comfortable asking "live"
-          Overflow room will be available for students who need individual support

We highly encourage that all students attend and participate in these discussions over the next two weeks however we understand that if you as a parent do not want your child to participate.

Speakers for the week of 9/21:
Megan Healy:
Health Educator at the Denver Health clinic inside TJ.  She has a background in supporting survivors of sexual violence and can discuss all topics around sexual health, healthy relationships, consent and communication, and more.

Becca Tiell-Krekeler, MSW, LSW
END Violence Specialist at TJ. She specializes in working with victims/survivors of any form of violence. She provides individual therapy, groups, advocacy, and education.

Denver District Attorney Office-Danielle Robinson
12 years of experience in the DA's office and most recently serves as our Sexual Assault Specialist.  She primarily handles most of the filing decisions on adult sexual assault cases working closely with Denver Police Department Sex Crimes Unit.

Thank you TJ,

Mike Christoff

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
Did You Know...?
Resiliency is the ability to recover to a natural state in a reasonable amount of time from a difficult situation or event.
Adversity is part of life. We all face difficulties, such as family problems, serious illness, a personal crisis, or a painful loss. Being resilient is important to dealing with adversities like these. Most people have a natural tendency to adapt and bounce back from adversity. However, parents can help their children learn to face challenges successfully, whether it is the stresses of everyday life, such as academic difficulties or problems with friends, or severe adversity, such as losing a home and being displaced from normal routines for months.
How can you help foster resiliency in your child?
1. Think positive! Modeling positive attitudes and positive emotions is very important. Children need to hear parents thinking out loud positively and being determined to persist until a goal is achieved. Using a "can do" problem-solving approach to problems teaches children a sense of power and promise.

2. Express love and gratitude! Emotions such as love and gratitude increase resiliency. Praise should always occur much more often than criticism. Children and adolescents who are cared for, loved, and supported learn to express positive emotions to others. Positive emotions buffer kids against depression and other negative reactions to adversity.

3. Express yourself! Resilient people appropriately express all emotions, even negative ones. Parents who help kids become more aware of emotions, label emotions appropriately, and help children deal with upsetting events are giving them useful life skills.

4. Get fit! Good physical health prepares the body and mind to be more resilient. Healthy eating habits, regular exercise and adequate sleep protect kids against the stress of tough situations. Regular exercise also decreases negative emotions such as anxiety, anger, and depression.

5. Foster competency! Making sure that children and adolescents achieve academically is great protection against adversity. Children who achieve academic success and who develop individual talents, such as playing sports, drawing, making things, playing musical instruments or playing games are much more likely to feel competent and be able to deal with stress positively. Social competency is also important. Having friends and staying connected to friends and loved ones can increase resiliency. Social competency can even be created by helping others.

Can we protect our kids from difficult times and stress? No. But we can help foster a sense of competency and the skills to face tough circumstances. The more we practice these approaches; the better able our children will be to weather whatever life brings!
