Announcement on School Reopening Plans
Dear Parents and Guardians,

It has been two weeks since California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a change in the system that assesses COVID-19 levels and categorizes the counties into a four-tiered, color-coded system. It was confirmed on Tuesday that San Mateo County remains at Tier One -- purple -- the most restrictive tier. This risk level requires schools in our county to remain in distance learning..

We are in communication with the San Francisco Archdiocese, the county health department, partner schools and other governing agencies to evaluate our best options moving forward.

We hope to have additional information on this important topic next week .

Thank you,
Barry Thornton, Ed.D.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier's Virtual Military Academy Information Night is Sept. 22

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) will host Military Night on Sept. 22 for high school students interested in attending a military academy. Representatives from the Military Academies - U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy - will be on hand to answer questions. Any student is welcome to attend and learn about the process - it is important to understand the application and nomination process early in your high school years. Students hoping to be nominated would have to be nominated through Speier.

Representatives from the Military Academies -- U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy -- will be presenting and available to answer questions.

Each year, the U.S. Service Academies accept a select few of our country’s best and brightest students to a four-year undergraduate program. The U.S. Military and Naval Academies consistently
rank in the top 20 liberal arts colleges and they provide this education free of tuition. For those of you interested in learning more about Service Academies and the application process, attend Speier's virtual Military Academy Information Night:

Internship Opportunities for Kumar for Congress 2020
Serra students are invited to apply to join the Kumar for Congress 2020 internship team. This is the sixth year of our internship program, with more than 1,000 participating interns this past summer.

The organization that managed this team was akin to a mid-size Silicon Valley company, with industry executives involved in mentoring, coaching and guiding our young students from high school and college. Many of our interns got promoted to associate manager, manager and senior manager positions.

Students can get involved in a high-energy progressive run by joining the Kumar for Congress 2020 all-year Internship program. This run stands for Medicare for All, Green New Deal and No PAC money - running against a 28-year incumbency.

There are many opportunities that work for your flexible schedule, that involve pandemic work, community work, political campaign work and activism with specific local challenges.

To get involved, submit your information and you will be invited to a short interview.

Admissions Season is Upon Us: Tell Your Friends About Our Virtual Admissions Events!

Serra admissions season is upon us! We encourage all of our current parents and students to help us get the word out about some of the virtual events created specifically for prospective families. Families can register for these Serra events after creating a profile on the Ravenna Hub. This will allow prospective students and families to view Serra through the viewpoints of students, teachers, parents, coaches, and staff. We hope to showcase why so many young men have chosen Serra for their high school education through our Wednesday Webinar series, our Padre for a Day program, Community Connections talk and Admissions Chat.
More information on these virtual Serra experiences can be found on our website.
Rescheduled Spring Awards Night To Be Held On Sept. 24, 2020
The spring awards ceremony will take place virtually on Sept. 24. The event, which celebrates the academic achievements of students in the current sophomore, junior and senior classes, was canceled last May.

We anticipate that this event will be conducted virtually, very similarly to the Senior Awards Night for last year’s seniors which was so well received in May.

We look forward to celebrating all of the recipients for their tremendous work! More information will be sent to parents and students as the date nears.

October Teach-In for Justice

The Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice is an annual gathering for members of the Ignatian family (Jesuit institutions and larger church) to come together in the context of social justice and solidarity to learn, reflect, pray, network, and advocate together. It is a place where people are empowered, re-energized, inspired, challenged, and supported by a community that sees faith and justice integrally linked.

Join the Serra contingency of students and faculty and engage in deep, focused discussion on Migration, Ecological and Racial Justice on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24-25. Take action on Monday, Oct. 26 as you practice advocacy with your local representatives.

The registration deadline will be Oct. 1. The $50 registration fee will be processed through TADS.  This fulfills the Christian Service requirement.

Please contact Mary Dowden, Campus Ministry Service Immersion Coordinator, for more information or register using the button below.
Changes Made to Service Hour Requirement for Serra Students

The amount of Christian service hours that our students are required to complete has been adjusted this year as we take into account the global health crisis and the safety of our Serra community.
All students must complete at least 10 hours of Christian service, although none of them need to be FIAT hours. In order to protect our students and the communities we serve, we will not require direct service with a marginalized population. Campus Ministry will work to provide virtual opportunities of service.
Service hour requirements by class year are:
Freshmen: Commit to a minimum of five non-FIAT hours plus the Freshmen Day of Service
Sophomores: Commit to a minimum of 10 non-FIAT hours
Juniors: Commit to a minimum of five non-FIAT hours plus the Junior Urban Plunge
Seniors: Commit to a minimum of 10 non-FIAT hours

Please contact Mr. Frank Bruno with questions or concerns.
