Thanksgiving Day 2020
Years ago, when we lived on our farm in Vermont where we had a myriad of animals, we were given a beautiful, white, Welch pony ( 20 years old and 13.1 hands) named Birchy. He had been living on a driveway and his owners’ kids had out grown him. At first, he would stay close to the barn, even when the other horses were out in the pasture. However, if I walked out into the pasture, he would follow me so closely that sometimes his front hoof would tap my heel. A visit from the Vet confirmed my suspicions: Birchy was completely blind on one eye and had only 10% vision in the other. He was all but blind, so that when I was around, he would zoom in on me in order to go anywhere beyond the confines of the barn.
On this Thanksgiving Day 2020, I am pondering all the many people, places, and things for which I am deeply grateful. As odd as it may seem in this very strange year, what is stands out to me is that I am very thankful for ZOOM! Until COVID hit, I had never heard of it. I thank God that, although we must wear masks and practice social distancing during this pandemic, technology has allowed us to be “together” in ways we never dreamed of less than a year ago.
For example, we just had a 45 minute ZOOM with some of our grandchildren in New England. It is first time we have been “together” for Thanksgiving in years! This coming Sunday is first Sunday of Advent and the beginning of the Church year. Traditionally, the texts for the first Sunday of Advent are focused, not on the birth of Jesus, but on the Second Coming of Jesus. They call our attention to the end of time, the Day of the Lord, when the cosmos will be dismantled and all God's purposes for creation will be fulfilled with the issuing in a new heaven and a new earth. Most of us would like a message that tells us that everything is OK and that everything will continue to be OK. We'd like to know that, if anything is amiss, we can do something about it, correct the situation, and get on with our lives. Like Birchy, we need reassurance, stability and certainty.
Because the world is changing faster than we can imagine, and we’re called to stay alert, pay attention, and zoom our hearts and minds in on Jesus, who is already with us, and yet Advent motivates us and inspires us, for the promise is that, in the moment of his second coming, all the evils of this world shall be overcome, and we shall experience the joy of his salvation forever more. And the Promise is near—as near as our own hearts. Because the Promise is so close, may we zoom in on Jesus, instead of on the frenetic hustle, bustle, and razzmatazz of the commercial Christmas that invades our senses through the media.
|
|
Advent gives us a chance to step back, to wake up, to get ready, in body, mind and spirit. Jesus is near. The veil that separates us from him is very thin, as we prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Christ which happened 2020+ years ago. Giving God thanks and praise, may we zoom our hearts and minds on staying awake, alert, and vigilant, for we never know when God’s Kingdom will come and God’s Will will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Blessings, love, and gratitude for all of you,

Combined Drive-in Mass & Lanai Mass Offering this Sunday at 10 AM
We are delighted to announce that we have another way to worship in-person while remaining in your car. This Sunday and going forward, the 10 AM Mass will be offered on the Thrift Store Lanai. Folks who wish to come up on the Lanai (as we have been doing) will still be able to so. However, you now will also have the option to remain in your car. Youʻll be able to hear every word on your carʻs FM radio. We have a short wave radio transmitter that works great, broadcasting to a special frequency that can be picked up by your car radio within 200 yards. Clergy will preach near the railing so that they can be seen by those in cars as well. We will bring the Sacrament to you. If you wish not to receive Holy Communion, but a blessing instead, as always, simply cross your arms across your chest and clergy will offer a blessing.
For those wishing to remain in their cars, please plan on getting to the church by 9:45 AM, to be directed where to park for optimal reception and line of sight.
Mahalo to parishioners Lew & Pat Chartrand, who have given generously towards the purchase of technology that ha helped us upgrade our capabilities to broadcast our services online and now to broadcast over car radios. Mahalo to all who are helping set up, run equipment, monitor the technology during services, and breakdown and load out!
This new technology will save us the extra work of setting up outdoor speakers, which is a bigger issue on days when it is raining in Waimea.

EfM Reviews from Current and Former Participants
Here are evaluations of the EfM experience by fellow parishioners who have taken the course:
“I have had the privilege of getting to know some of the most wonderful ‘fellow travelers’ on the path of spiritual growth that I could ever imagine. This is the best in-depth study of the Bible, of Christian history, theology and philosophy one could ever encounter. EfM is an amazing program.”
—Donna Brown
“EfM taught me valuable information about the Bible and what was happening in the world at that time. I have a much better understanding of the history of our faith and how I can live a more productive and better life. I loved every minute of it. The course did not teach dogma and allowed me to think for myself. I highly recommend EfM to anyone.”
—Dallas Gomes
“I first heard about EfM a couple years ago. I asked around about it and was usually told you had to do a lot of reading. Well, after completing the first term, I can confirm the reading. But there’s also great group discussion in our meetings: lively and at times heartfelt and always non-judgemental. As a result, my knowledge of the Bible has broadened considerably and my faith has deepened. I think what I got out of my first year I’d EfM study is absolutely worth it.”er
—Frankie Pang

Last Sunday's St. Jamesʻ Lanai and Drive in Service
|
|
Good morning David:
Seeing you, Bobby and Marnie on the Thrift Store Lanai with parking attendants Gerrit, Frankie, Paul exposed to our famous Kamakani and Ki'pu'upu'u Waimea weather - allowing remainder of us to sit in our cars, tune in on the radio to clearly hear each speak and sing, was such a blessing. Kudos to you all and especially to one(s) who figured out the broadcasting capability.
God Bless You and All.
Aloha,
Marci

Please continue to prayerfully consider the blessings you can create for others with your pledge.
Also, there are many creative ways to give that could help you with your taxes. If you own stocks or mutual funds, for example, you may be able to gift shares to the church in a tax efficient manner. Or if you’re over 70 1/2 years of age, you can donate your Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA and receive a tax benefit. Contact your financial advisor and then call Jaisy Jardine, our Parish Administrator, and let her know if you plan to pledge using one of these methods. You can reach Jaisy at the church office at 885-4923 or Office@stjameshawaii.org

REMEMBER TO PICK UP YOUR STUDY GUIDES
ADVENT PROGRAM
STARTS WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2ND
Advent, the season before Christmas, marks the beginning of the new Church year. Start off this new year with rooting yourself anew in Godʻs Word. If you already have a daily habit of Scripture reading and prayer, you are invited to add to that discipline with members and friends of your parish ʻohana as we are guided by The Rt. Rev'd. Bob Gillies, retired Scottish bishop of Orkney and Aberdeen. Bishop Gillies was our guest preacher a month or so ago and we joyfully welcome him back to lead us in a four week Advent Study entitled:
"THE APPROACHING WORD"
Praying and Reading the Bible in Sequence through the weekdays of Advent
THREE Wednesday evenings, from 6 - 7 PM via ZOOM.
Beginning the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, December 2.
(Zoom login information to come, as well as ways we are seeking to help to include those who might not have access to ZOOM).
A fundamental outcome of this Advent programme will be a deepening of faith and the increasing development of holier living in each participant.
Focusing on the four very short books of the bible (1 & 2 Thessalonians, Jude and Peter), as Bishop Bob writes, "The main element in this programme is for each of us to read a section from these New Testament Epistles each day. You will be provided with a list of readings along with a short introduction to each written by Bishop Bob."
In addition Bishop Bob has published and dedicated to our parish a study guide to assist each at home in the daily reflection on the assigned Scripture passage. We expect the study guide books to arrive the first of this next week.
This is for all those who are part of St James’ and St Columba’s Churches
Hawai’i Island as well as for any others who wish to follow this Programme.
Your reading of these passages will be enhanced if you:
- Are able to join in the online talks given by Bishop Bob Gillies from his home in St Andrews, Scotland. Bishop Gillies has prepared this programme for us.
- Can have access to a copy of the study book, dedicated to our two churches, that gives more extensive notes on the Bible passages below as well as on their original setting.
- Can take part in the guided praying that will be explained in the talks.
No previous Bible knowledge is needed for this programme.
All that’s needed is your searching enthusiasm and your encouragement of others!
----
Information and Outline for members of the congregations:
Overview
To encourage everyone in the congregations to read those epistles that are set by The Episcopal Church, sequentially, each weekday through Advent 2020.
To encourage everyone in the congregations to develop a practice of personal, silent, praying using these epistles.
Outcome
Four epistles from the New Testament, at least, will have been read over the four weeks before Christmas by participants and will have been the focus for the midweek teaching given by Bishop Bob Gillies. As stated above, A fundamental outcome of this Advent programme will be a deepening of faith and the increasing development of holier living in each participant.
Resourcing
Bishop Bob Gillies will give introductory talks over four successive weeks to give context, colour and application to these Bible readings from the epistles. A book offering extra background and details of the daily readings will be produced and made available. At the midweek 6 PM HST ZOOM meetings the talks will be supplemented by led times of praying with group discussion and questions.
All talks will be delivered online by Bishop Bob Gillies from his home in St Andrews, Scotland, UK.
Dates for the Introductory Talks
Wednesdays, December 2nd, 9th, 16th at 6 PM local time.

NEW UPDATED INFORMATION
Good news! We have parishioners on the Mainland who would like to join for the Advent Study, but it is too late in the evening on the East Coast for them to participate live. Bishop Gillies has given his permission for the ZOOM sessions to be recorded, which we will do so people can watch or rewatch later. Weʻll make sure it is posted on our YouTube.com page for people to access the next day and going forward.
There are only about 12 books left (one per household, please) that Bishop Gillies, wrote, published, and dedicated to our parish ʻohana. These are guides to accompany the Advent Study. Please contact the parish office to obtain a free copy. Copies were paid for by a genereous parishioner.
In signing up, a copy of the study book will be reserved for you. You may pick up in the Parish Office, at St. Columbaʻs Church, or be mailed a copy. It is hoped that all who sign up will be able to attend all four sessions as well as partake in reading the brief daily assigned readings. However, it is understood that other commitments may keep you from joining every weekly offering.

The rains came, the wind blew and inside St. Columba's the congregation went. We all chipped in and got the church all put back together for the service.
The Community Meal has taken over the fellowship area and spilled over into the pews so we had a few things to do to be service ready!
Bob Lundgren put on his rain poncho and braved the driving rain to ring the bell and Clay and Helen Reeves braved the weather and drove all the way from Kona to worship with us! It was nice to be back in the church and the rain on the roof was loud but soothing.
We also had a huge treat with the music and song of Steve Bess. He brought his talents and gifts and the Spirit moved us to tears. Steve did a beautiful rendition of Breathe on Me Breath of God with The Queen's Prayer. It was absolutely beautiful. Thank you Steve for blessing us!
St. Columba's worship services will be continuing inside the church as the winter rains have begun. Social distancing will be observed and masks are required.
|
|
St. Columba's will be zooming "The Approaching Word "Advent series presented by Bishop Bob Gilles on their TV. If you do not have a computer or are unable to zoom in for the series, you are welcome to come to St. Columba's. The series begins Wednesday December 2nd and continues every Wednesday in Advent. The time is 6pm to 7pm. Social distancing and masks, please!

Report from the Discernment Committee on Keiki, Youth, and Families Ministry position
A few weeks ago, we asked for your assistance in determining the future of our Keiki, Youth and Families ministry following the retirement of Susan Acacio. Thanks to all of you who responded and provided such detailed and thoughtful observations and suggestions.
The Discernment committee reviewed all the survey responses and recently made their report to the Vestry, saying, in part: We have reviewed the responses and our co-chair, Felicia Linton has created a ‘word cloud’ of the responses to question 2 on the survey, which deals with the values that should be reflected in the youth program, which we felt might be a useful visualization of what the respondents value most.
Our overall conclusion is that we do need to move forward and fill the position as soon as is feasible, as there is a danger that we will permanently lose the involvement of some of the keiki and families who have been drawn to the parish through these programs. We considered the issue of one coordinator versus dividing the duties between two people, one focused on the younger children and the other on middle school and teenagers, and we can see virtue in both approaches, but feel at this time, emphasis should be given to the younger children as they are more numerous in the congregation at this time.
CLICK HERE to review the tabulated responses to the survey (CORRECTED LINK)
This is the Word Cloud that Felicia created that reflects the values that the survey respondents cited:

CALLING ALL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT PERFORMERS!
|
|
“Do Not Be Afraid”
Calling all Christmas pageant performers! Children and youth from St. James’, St. Columba’s, the Beach Mass and our online congregations are warmly invited to participate in our first-ever virtual Christmas pageant, which will be pre-recorded on video (using smartphones and Zoom conferencing for safe distancing) and posted on our Facebook and YouTube pages on Christmas Eve.
Jeanne Cooper, a former Episcopal school chaplain and now a member of St. James’, will adapt and direct the script for “Do Not Be Afraid.” We plan to have all the pageant parts distributed by Dec. 1, with editing completed by Dec. 20 (the fourth Sunday in Advent.) The virtual format means rehearsals are at home and at flexible hours, which should fit any family’s needs. If you, or your youth and children, are interested in performing or helping with props and costumes, please contact Jeanne ASAP via the parish office, office@stjameshawaii.org.
We would also like to include several short videos of Christmas carols that our virtual audience can sing along with. Musical contributions from youth and adult performers are welcome! If you are interested in contributing a musical number, please contact Rona Lee at music@stjameshawaii.org.
We are also looking for a tech-savvy youth or adult to help with the pageant video editing, including stringing videos together and assistance with green screens for Zoom segments. Contact Rev. David if you are interested in serving in this role, frdavid@stjameshawaii.org

A Day of Thanks
The weather all week was cold and raining, but yesterday it turned out to be a beautiful Thanksgiving Day! We have so much to be thankful for our 1st Drive Thru Thanksgiving Luncheon of mash potatoes, stuffing, turkey with gravy, roll, fresh homemade cranberries, green bean/corn veggie and dessert.
We are so Thankful for our sponsors Dr Joan Greco and In Honor of Diana White’s Birthday for monetary donation, Honoka'a High Leadership and Waimea Coffee Company for stuffing, turkey and gravy, Mamane Bakery for the rolls, all our turkey, stuffing and mash potato cookers and dessert bakers.
And to ALL our volunteers who answered our call and came between 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to help with set up, making gravy, veggie mix, dessert packing, produce bag packing, meal packing, traffic control, car hopping and clean up. We couldn’t have done it without all of you. You truly helped us Feed the Body and Soul, this Thanksgiving!
We didn’t expect to have produce bags, but ended up making one of lettuce, papaya, bananas, starfruit, cabbage, cucumbers, kale, collard greens and avocados. We thank the Bridges Program, Kohala Resorts Association, Honoka'a High, REAL FARMS, HPA-Willie, and other community members who dropped of veggies to make these wonderful produce bags.
With this being our 1st drive thru, we didn’t know what to expect, so we planned on our usual 650 meals, hoping all would remember it was a lunch and not dinner. We ended up serving 433 meals, to 56 cars and 4 walk ups and our delivery angels took 115 meals. (Wednesday night Honoka'a served over 1200 and Waimea Coffee Company served 250)
I can’t thank you enough to all who made this day possible. The Waimea Community Meal Committee is truly blessed to have so many who come to help us “Build Community One Meal At A Time”
Happy Thanksgiving to All
Smiles,
Sue

MOROCCAN STEW, oh my!
We cooked Moroccan stew for the first time for our brothers and sisters - a recipe from Alea. And Alea supervised the cooking on site in the kitchen in Waimea. She fit right in. It was labor intense because it was all fresh. Butternut squash, onions, ginger, chickpeas, kale, stock and a ton of wonderful spices. If I could smell, it probably smelled like a farmer’s market in Marrakesh (minus the monkeys). Alea told me that EVERYONE she served it to said they loved it. I tried to brace her for the inevitable sour grape. Then as the day went on several people sampled it and, rats - THEY ALL loved it!!
Stanley and Tim put in some serious time in preparation too…. they both made me laugh, such good spirits. And I think Tim kinda takes the “reasoned" approach to things - I subscribe to that philosophy. His energy and Stanley’s “put your head down and do the job stick-to-it-ness" (with a super haircut this week) really were like booster rockets.
The usual rice, kale/fresh greens salad and an extra thick (courtesy of John) serving of bread really made for a nutritious meal that should have energized anyone that consumed it. Really, it was very good for everyone!! Thank you Alea.
And besides that, Sue and the team have been prepping for Thanksgiving - an unbelievable amount of work has gone into this and it should be delicious. I am thankful that I will get a chance to help the team on Thursday - I am on the cleanup crew - just one of my specialties :-)… And I am thankful we will be able to serve the community and for the people at St. James' and St. Columba's that all make this work.
Gregory
|
|
This week we had a new recipe at our Community meal, Moroccan stew, made by our own coordinator Alea Backus. We served 397 meals of stew, rice, and salad. Mahalo again to Tom & Cindy Kapp for sponsoring this week’s meal.
Alea & Gregory cooked the meal with the help of Sue, and many steadfast volunteers who make it possible for us to serve these meals each week. We are so grateful to all the hands and hearts involved, including generous donations from local farms and businesses.
Volunteers Josie & Millie packed cookies this week, provided by Pat Anderson and Sherry Dupaya. We were blessed to have an over abundance of produce including avocados, papayas, kale, lettuce, starfruit, limes, lemons and tangerines thanks to local contributions, and 10 Pa’ina bags by Oceans as well. We continue to hand out the keiki activity packs from Vibrant Hawaii. We had 29 cars come and get meals.
Our first round of packing meals by Alice, Millie, Clara, Jessie, Josie, Wilma & Steven went smoothly as we made enough for Andi, delivering 75 meals in Pa’auilo Mauka, as well as packing our 5 coolers with 30 meals for the car hop. We pack a second time for Andi’s second load of 80 meals and make sure our volunteers get their meals they provide for their families and community. Sharon gracefully managed the car hop as always with the help of Glenn, making sure everyone gets their meals and produce bags.

Trauma Informed Care Workshops
Our communities are experiencing intense stressors during this COVID-19 pandemic with major economic, psychological and social impacts. Understanding these stressors and underlying traumas creates opportunity to promote understanding, healing and resiliency.
St. Jamesʻ Parish, in collaboration with Ke Ala Hoʻaka (KAHA) will present three workshops to help us recognize and understand what trauma is, how it affects us, and ways to promote healing and resiliency. These workshops offer a two-lens perspective combining Western science and Native Hawaiian and other Indigenous practices toward strength and healing.
Session 1: Trauma Informed Care (TIC) 101 on Friday, 12/11 from 2 – 3:15 pm: This workshop lays the "foundation of trauma" through understanding how our brain work, stress and our reaction to stress and the potential effects on body, mind and spirit.
Session 2: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) & Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs)/Protective Factors on Wednesday, 12/16 from 2 – 3:15 pm: This workshop explains the landmark ACEs study and the potential long-term effects on individuals and society. We will also explore Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs) and the Protective Factors Framework which can be utilized to strengthen service and connection as we serve our community and Ohana.
Session 3: Cultural & Historical Trauma on Friday, 12/18 from 2 – 4 pm: This workshop examines inter and trans-generational trauma, with emphasis on the effects on individuals and communities right here in Hawaiʻi. It also explores cultural healing and resiliency perspectives.
All workshops are free of charge and brought to you by a partnership between Vibrant Hawaiʻi and KAHA, funded by County of Hawaiʻi Cares grant. Please join us for this special opportunity to serve, love and fortify our community!

Aloha!
I will be teaching a Mental Health First Aid Certification course via Zoom and would like to extend an invitation to our St. James 'ohana for anyone to attend. This is an 8 hour certification which is being offered free from a grant via Vibrant Hawai'i.
What We Do | Vibrant Hawai'i
I have tentatively set a date for Saturday, December 12 and will need to certify a minimum of 10 people in the community by mid December. Do you think this something that our 'ohana would be interested in?

Tithing is an Old Testament principle, giving ten percent of what we have and hold to God. If you were to ask me if “tithing” is an important principle for today, I would say “no.” I think the invitation is not for 10 percent but for 100 percent. We are trustees of 100 percent of the life entrusted to us by God. The question then becomes how we should spend our lives, being the gifts that they are.
