From the Rector
If you hang out with a certain kind of Christian hippie contemplative long enough, you might hear the phrase “Fall Triduum.” And when you do, you might have no idea what they’re talking about. In the strictest terms, it might be a stretch. “Triduum” means “three days” and only really gets used to refer to the great three days of Holy Week: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter on Holy Saturday. Those three days are the heart of the Christian year. But lately I’ve heard more talk about a Fall Triduum, referring to the three days we’re about to reach: Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day.

As I said, it might be a stretch. The provenance of Halloween is an absolute mess. Like many holidays, it has pre-Christian roots, got an independent Christian observance laid over on top of it, and then has gone through the secularizing forces of the consumerist market. Each new layer strips away some of the earlier meaning, adds more parts, and transforms some of what it leaves. The name of the day is All Hallows (Saints) Eve, but you don’t find many people arguing to restore the Christian roots of Halloween—because it’s not clear that those roots are Christian. We see a similar syncretism (combining different traditions) in el Dia de los Muertos occurring on the same days. European Christianity and more local traditions and practices over time get interwoven until it can be very difficult to pick out individual threads.

I don’t think we need to pick out all those threads to hear a call from the church that these coming days are somehow different from the other days around them. Nothing magical happens October 31, but we can all use a reminder that sometimes the gap between what we can see and what we don’t see gets smaller. Or as the old Celtic Christians used to say, there are places where and times when the veil between worlds is thin. All Saints (November 1) is a principal feast of the Christian year and commemorates all the saints at once while reminding us of our fellowship in the communion of saints. All Souls (November 2), or officially the Commemoration of All Faithful Departed, is the day that is actually about our grandparents and friends who loved Jesus and have gone on before us without recognition from the official church calendar. We’ll combine a liturgical observance of All Saints and All Souls on Sunday, November 7). A Fall Triduum might indeed be a stretch. But it is always good to interrupt the mundane all-consuming busy-ness of our lives to mark sacred time.

So how might we mark sacred time in the midst of trick or treating and then rushing through normal weekdays? First, slow down and break a routine. Stop and notice what you usually rush past. Maybe the veil between worlds does get thin; but certainly, there’s a lot of God’s beauty and work in this world that we are too busy to notice. Second, make time to think and pray about the invisible fellowships of which we are a part—and how these fellowships can help call out the best in us. And finally, yes, remember our own dead. A year with so much death, trauma, and anger has warped our habits of mourning and remembering. All Souls calls us back to a faithful, grateful remembrance of those we have loved, but see no longer.

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

An Invitation from the Vestry
Dear People of Saint Paul’s:

At the beginning of this year, we passed an annual budget which was projected to take us through the end of the year. We committed to revisiting it mid-year to see if there needed to be additions or reductions based on our actual financial situation. When we made that commitment, we also agreed to a second presentation of the budget to the church as an explanation. As the process unfolded, it coincided with the announcement and arrival of Fr. Biddy. To allow Fr. Biddy to be present, we delayed the second meeting until November 7. On that Sunday, the Vestry will join Treasurer Will Rice and Finance Committee Chair Monty Osteen to discuss the amended budget during the 9:30 a.m. adult formation class time. While the numbers are pretty similar to the original budget, we hope that you will enable us to have a better understanding of what our commitments and opportunities are. At the August Vestry meeting, Will and Monty presented an in-depth look at the budget to the vestry, and we expect to have another similar review of the endowments. All of this is in keeping with our commitment to providing clear information about the business of the Church. Please join us November 7 at 9:30 a.m. in the Berlin Room.

Yours,
Ashley Wright

Stewardship Thoughts from Catherine Stuckey
The gospel of Luke tells us, “to whom much is given, much is required.” The way I read this tells me I’m in big trouble! This church gives, gives and gives some more to me and my family. Many years ago, I remember reading words from a Sr. Warden revealing he spent more on his weekly entertainment than he gave to the church each Sunday. Do we give back as much as we are required or expected? Not even close. But being good stewards requires commitment and allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us. May this work continue.

Sunday Forum - Christian Decision Making
(In Unprecedented Times) - Fr. Eric
9:30 - 10:30 AM
The Berlin Room
This Sunday we'll continue our conversation about how the decisions of the earliest Christians might help shape how we at Saint Paul's make decisions now. The first Christians in the book of Acts were doing everything for the first time, facing situations they had never faced before. We, too, are living in a different world than the one we knew. This week we're working through Acts 2 through 7. All are welcome and there is no requirement to have been there last week to be there this week.
Godly Play - grades PK - 1
9:30 AM -10:30 AM
In the Children's Ministry Center
ALL children inherently know God, but it is up to us to give them the language of the Christian faith so they can grow to make meaning of our faith in their own lives. Godly Play is a profound method rooted in Montessori principles that forms child spirituality by attending to their natural gifts for wonder and discovery. Children are greeted at the door of the Godly Play room by the "door person." It is VERY important for parents to respect the boundary of the door threshold by not entering the children's sacred space--their Godly Play room. We cannot wait to welcome your children each Sunday!

For more information, contact Kim Butler or Ivey Coleman.
SPARK - grades 2- 5 (two classes)
9:30 AM -10:30 AM
In the Children's Ministry Center
Our older children will again immerse themselves in SPARK, where they will work with the same themes and Scripture that we all encounter in common worship. Every lesson follows a four-part pattern: Gather, Open the Bible, Activate Faith, and Send. Week after week, the children and their leaders gather together, explore the Scriptures, enjoy one another's company, pray, and discover God's presence in their midst.

For more information, contact Coleman Graham or Laurie Montgomery.
Colaborate: Bible Study - grades 6-8
9:30 AM -10:30 AM
In the Children's Ministry Center
The Colaborate Curriculum is designed to help youth take an honest look at the holy mystery and the complexity of Scripture to move them onto a path of growth and discovery. Using infographics, this program will include studies of both New Testament and Old Testament lessons to start a conversation about God and what it means to follow Jesus.

For more information, contact Laurie Montgomery.
Animate: grades 9-12
9:30 AM -10:30 AM
In the Children's Ministry Center
For our older youth, we will begin the year with the Animate Curriculum which begins each gathering with a video featuring a leading voice from the Christian faith to open a group reflection. Topics include: God: Faith Is a Quest, Cross: Where God Is, Jesus: The Revolution of Love and others to begin to ask the questions about faith for their journey.

Calling All Bakers and All Who Love Cake
Saint Paul's celebrates birthdays once per month with prayer, song, and cake at 10:30AM in in the churchyard on the second Sunday. We would love to have you sign up for a special month and give the gift of cake, or team up with a fellow baker and bring a homemade treat. Cakes need to be large enough to serve 40-50 people, so a half sheet is usually the perfect size. You can even help serve the cake to our church family. If you would like to sponsor a month but physically cannot bring the cake to church, please contact Melissa. Any questions, contact Melissa Friedman.

LOOKING AHEAD
Evensong
Sunday, November 14, 5:30 PM
Evensong will be sung by the Saint Paul's Choir Sunday, November 14, 5:30 PM in place of the usual Celtic Service. Evensong, a service of sung evening prayer, finds its roots in the Medieval English church and has become one of the most beloved liturgies of the Episcopal Church. At Saint Paul's, the choir sings this beautiful service twice a year. It is celebrated with the singing of glorious canticles, psalms, songs of praise, and petitions for renewal by the Holy Spirit.

This Evensong includes the music of William Smith of Durham, T. Tertius Noble, and the premiere of the anthem, "Son of my soul" by Todd Wilson, commissioned by Tom Robertson, in thanksgiving for the ministry of Keith Shafer. Mark Dickens joins us as organist, Melissa Larkin Schultz and Kathleen Chandler are soloist.

This is a wonderful opportunity to invite family and friends! A reception follows, and the Nursery will be available beginning at 5 PM.
