Lexington Awarded Tree City USA Growth Award from Arbor Day Foundation

Lexington received a Tree City USA Growth Award from the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to effective urban forest management. Only a small percentage of Tree City USA participants earn the Growth Award Honor due to a continued dedication towards building a sustainable community.

A Growth Award is bestowed to a community alongside their Tree City USA recognition for demonstrating environmental improvement and a higher level of tree care.

The Growth Award recognizes major milestones and annual activities in five categories on a point based system to build sustainable community forestry programs over the long term:

  • building a team
  • measuring trees and forests
  • planning the work
  • performing the work
  • building the community framework

About John Frey

John W. Frey, a Lexington resident from 1965 until his death in 2020, was known widely for his diplomatic leadership of a myriad of civic committees in town. A quiet man, he nevertheless was highly skilled in leading people to work harmoniously for the public good.

A professional landscape architect, John’s designs throughout Lexington added greatly to its orderly functions and beautification. In addition to his professional contributions, John was an active member of three Town committees: the Bicycle Advisory, Design Advisory, and Tree Committees.

John led the Tree Committee to develop a Town Bylaw to protect trees from removal and to partner with the Town's Department of Public Works in a wide range of tree protection and maintenance activities.

We are honored to bring you this event in which YOU can share your own stories, and the stories of people and events you have witnessed, for True Story Theater actors to reenact. If you don't have stories, you can watch and learn in an engaging improv theater format.

Sponsored by LexPride, Lexington Historical Society, Lexington Senior Services, Arlington Council on Aging, Arlington LGBTQIA+ Rainbow Commission—and featuring True Story Theater. Funded by a grant from the Dana Home Foundation.
