Four Vikings named National Merit Commended Students

Earlier this quarter H-F was pleased to announce its two Class of 2022 National Merit Semifinalists (David Gibek & Carter Langston); now we are pleased to announce our four Class of 2022 National Merit Commended students! Although they will not continue in the competition for National Merit scholarships, they are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Congratulations to: Lucas Bouchie, William Goldberg, Samuel Starkenburg and Keisha Toguem!

Viking to compete at IHSA State Tournament!

Congratulations — and good luck! — to senior Cameron Reid! Cameron finished in 7th Place at last week's IHSA Sectional Boys' Golf Tournament and was named to the All-Sectional team. Next he will represent H-F at the IHSA State Tournament this Friday & Saturday, held at The Den Golf Course in Bloomington. This season the Boys' Golf team was coached by Mr. Stiglic, Science teacher. Good luck, Cameron!

Don't miss the first indoor H-F concert since 2019, set for 7 p.m. tonight — Wednesday, Oct. 6 — in the Mall Auditorium! Our Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonia Orchestra and Viking Orchestra will all be performing, under the direction of Mr. Engrav, Fine Arts teacher. Vaccination Clinic: Friday, Oct. 8

This Friday, Oct. 8, H-F is partnering with Jewel-Osco to offer a vaccination clinic for students in the H-F Performing Arts Center!. Students who register by the end of today (Oct. 6) will be sent a pass during class on Friday, Oct. 8, to receive their vaccine(s). Students will need to bring along a signed consent form (Vaccination Consent Form), insurance card (if applicable) and complete the vaccination registration: Vaccination Registration. Vaccines available will include:


 • Pfizer COVID-19 — 1st or 2nd shot — Free


Additional vaccines will be available with your insurance card. Insurance will be billed for these vaccines, or vaccines can be paid for by check or credit card at time of service. These include: Flu vaccine (21-22); Meningococcal (Required for all seniors by 10/15); Tdap; MMR; Hepatitis B; Pneumococcal; Shingles; and Human Papillomavirus (HPV - Gardasil). Please be sure to complete the registration form today!

SHIELD sign up extended until Friday, Oct. 8

H-F will begin SHIELD Illinois testing onsite to screen students, teachers and staff for COVID-19 the week of Oct. 25. Designed by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign researchers, SHIELD Illinois is a RT-PCR saliva test that has been highly effective at identifying and isolating asymptomatic individuals. At H-F, testing will be offered on an opt-in basis. We strongly encourage unvaccinated students and staff to participate in the testing program. However, all students and staff are welcome, as well. Please read complete details in this SHIELD Testing Letter; opt in for testing with this SHIELD Testing Consent Form by Friday, Oct. 8.

Early College & Career Awareness Program: Thursday, Oct. 14


Join H-F School Counselor Ms. Edwards for the first online Early College & Career Awareness Program, set for Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. You will get information on what skills you can begin building right now to lay a good foundation for applying to and getting admitted to college and what the career and labor department data trends are. Also, learn how you can connect electives at H-F with your career interests! Guest presenters will be Omar Solomon from Eastern Illinois U. and Mark Kramer from ReMark Training. The Guidance Office invites H-F juniors and seniors to its annual College Night on Monday, Oct. 18, where 200+ colleges and universities will be available to meet with you and a parent/guardian in the Fieldhouse. Choose between one of two sessions: 5-6 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Students can also make appointments to meet with college representatives in the College Room during the school day. For a list of scheduled colleges, log onto Naviance.


Please note: Attendance is limited per COVID-19 guidelines from the IDPH. Registration is required — click here to sign up and to view all event regulations. Last Friday was Youth Night at H-F Stadium as the Viking Varsity Football team faced the Bolingbrook Raiders. At this annual event, designed to inspire future Vikings (and the greater H-F community), the H-F Marching Vikings were joined on the field by student-performers from James Hart School and Parker Junior High for two numbers prior to the game and for two songs during halftime. In addition, the young Cheer Buddies joined our H-F Co-Ed Cheer team on the sidelines and for special performances during halftime (below). Senior filmmaker a finalist in international competition


Congratulations to senior Aria Harrell for producing a short film that was named a finalist in the ConnectHER Film Festival 2021 this week! Her film, Ambera fictional short film that depicts violence against women in the area of human trafficking — is one of six in the running (and the only U.S. finalist) for the judges' choice grand prize ($5,000) and one of four finalists in the Ending Violence Against Women category ($2,500). The ConnectHER Film Festival amplifies the voices of women and girls through film. The organization has awarded more than $175,000 in scholarships and have received more than 1,250 original films from young filmmakers from 60 countries. Winners in this year's contest will be announced virtually on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. For more information and to view Aria's film, please click here...

Debate Team: First tournament results


Congratulations to the H-F Debate Team on completing its first tournament of the school year! Some of the team's novice students competed in their first tournament ever this past weekend. Although this tournament was online, a hybrid of in-person and online tournaments is expected this year. English teacher receives state award


Congratulations to Mr. Mulling, English teacher & H-F Class of 2011 alumnus, for receiving the Jerry Mathis Outstanding Young Educator Award last month! The Mathis Award recognizes an outstanding young communication and/or theater educator in Illinois. It is presented to a current Illinois teacher who has taught five or fewer years in the field of communication or theatre and who has demonstrated outstanding potential for success in the discipline.
