ILS Chair's News & Notes

Success is the sum of small efforts – repeated day in and day out.

- Robert Collier

Dear ILS Members,

Last Friday, our Section did something that it does best – hosted a fantastic iLaw conference! For the past several weeks, the iLaw Steering Committee and your Executive Board worked relentlessly to organize our full-day, multi-track conference. As you can see from the photos below, with over 150 people in attendance, robust programming and stellar speakers, iLaw2023 was one for the history books! Again, thank you to the ILS members and law school volunteers for their efforts, to our vendor sponsors for their generous support and to you, our members and friends, for participating in this year’s conference.

iLaw2023 may be finished but the ILS’ momentum and efforts to continue collaborating with our international colleagues remain steadfast. On March 6, 2023, in conjunction with the Ilustre Colegio de la Abogacia de Madrida (the Madrid Bar Association), the ILS will host Invirtiendo en EEUU: Aspectos Legales. This half-day conference will feature panel presentations from ILS members discussing key issues that foreign citizens must consider and be aware of when evaluating and considering doing business in the United States. A very big THANK YOU to Past ILS Chair, Eduardo Palmer, for his herculean efforts in organizing and bringing to life this event for our Section.

Wishing you all a happy Friday.

Best regards,

Jacqueline Villalba, Esq.

Internship Opportunity Organized by the Paris Bar for both English and French Speaking Lawyers!

Since 1991, the Paris Bar organizes a unique training program for young French speaking lawyers, in partnership with the Ecole de Formation professionnelle des Barreaux du ressort de la cour d'appel de Paris (EFB).  The "Stage International" brings together young French speaking lawyers from all over the world for a two-month theoretical and practical training.  Since 2015, the Paris Bar also organizes a second version of the program for English speaking lawyers called the "International Program".

Both programs are organized in cooperation with foreign bar associations and are supported by some French Embassies abroad. The Stage International will take place from October to November 2023 (8 weeks).  The International Program will take place in May and June 2023 (exact dates to be confirmed by the Paris Bar).

The internship offers participants an introduction to the French legal system.  In the first month of the Stage International the foreign lawyers will participate in programs of the “Ecole de Formation du Barreau” to be able to understand the French legal system and its procedures.  Participants are able to discover the daily routine of the Palais de Justice by attending hearings, visiting the major French institutions and getting an insight of European law.  In the second month, the foreign lawyers will have the opportunity to experience Parisian legal life and will intern in a Parisian Law Firm.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Europe Committee Chair Susanne Leone at sleone@leonezhgun.com for more information.
