COVID-19 vaccinations are now open for all KU employees and students. Kansas moved into Phase 5 of vaccine distribution on March 29, which means anyone over the age of 16 is eligible for the vaccine. Fill out the county’s vaccine survey to be notified of vaccine opportunities. You can find alternative vaccine distribution options, including pharmacies and nonprofit locations, at the CDC's Vaccine Finder website.

Each year, KSPA invites member publications to submit their work for experts to evaluate. Ph.D. Candidate Harrison Rosenthal’s column “A case for comps: Embracing them with appreciation, not consternation” was published in Media Law Notes, the trade journal for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s (AEJMC) Law & Policy Division. Rosenthal serves as a division officer and the graduate student liaison. Read the column here. Rosenthal also presented his paper “Speech Imperialization” at the 2021 AEJMC Southeast Colloquium, March 18-20.

KU Study Abroad is offering summer and fall study abroad and global internship opportunities. Modified to incorporate best practices in mitigating COVID-19 transmission and spread, extensive opportunities are available for disciplinary and cultural learning.

Wichita Gridiron Scholarships: Students are encouraged to apply for more than $10,000 in scholarships raised through Gridiron, a Wichita stage show starring members of the local media. Gridiron is put on by the Kansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Deadline to apply is March 31. Learn more and apply here.
The Fred Young Hearst Television Producing Fellowship is now accepting applications until April 16. Candidates must be May 2021 graduates with an interest in a career as a television news producer. Learn more here.
CNBC is partnering with NBCUAcademy to present a live, virtual town hall event at noon April 14 for college students to learn personal finance skills. Hosted by CNBC Senior Personal Finance Correspondent Sharon Epperson, the free event will give students access to financial, business and thought leaders to answer questions about financial topics from saving to borrowing to investing. Gavin Wade, business manager for the University Daily Kansan, and three other members of the sales team were guests in the Journalism 611 Sales Strategies class on March 15. Wade and his team sat in on the lecture and then the class broke into four different groups to discuss creative ideas that might benefit UDK customers. Each group discussed a different topic including establishment of business relationships, business categories, communication, and the restaurant business. Each group then presented their creative ideas to the entire class. Creativity can be a fun and inspiring experience, and the UDK sales team walked away with some great new ideas. Thanks to the Sales Strategy class for jumping in with their ideas on this project.

The KU FNSA Powwow & Indigenous Cultures Festival is back with a variety of virtual events next month. For over 30 years, the KU First Nations Student Association (FNSA) has hosted the KU Powwow. In 2017, the Lied Center began its partnership with FNSA to help support the KU Powwow and expand the event to educate the community about the uniqueness of diversity of Native American peoples in our community, the United States, and beyond. Baron to accept National Citation during online event April 21 |
Martin Baron, retired executive editor of The Washington Post, will accept the William Allen White National Citation award during a virtual event at 4 p.m. April 21 during an online discussion with J-School students, faculty, staff, trustees and alumni. The event also will be open to the public. Baron was selected as the 2020 National Citation recipient and was scheduled to receive the award and give an address on the KU campus last April, but the event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
