Customer Use of AirTags - Update
UPDATE

Peak season is underway and NFC has encountered several situations in which the customer included an AirTag in their shipment. As noted below, there are no legal grounds which we can use to prevent a customer from putting a tracking device within their HHG.

Please ensure that you provide NFC with timely, accurate shipment updates, so that we can keep our customers advised on their shipment status. Thank you for your continued support in working through this challenge.
Last month’s Military Times Article has resulted in a significant amount of discussion by Industry, the Services and USTRANSCOM regarding customer use of AirTags. This was the first known industry exposure to AirTags but all indications are these devices will continue to be utilized by those moving within the military.

By definition, an AirTag is described by Apple as “A super easy way to keep track of your stuff. Attach one to your keys, slip another in your backpack. And just like that, they’re on your radar in the Find My app, where you can also track down your Apple devices and keep up with friends and family.”

It is understandable that some may feel shipment tracking is a violation of our driver’s privacy, however there is not legal grounds to prohibit a shipper from placing a tracking device within their household goods. In fact, many van lines and agencies already provide GPS tracking to their fleets.

National believes strongly that transparency is a two-way street that is entered into jointly by the service member and the companies servicing their shipment. We acknowledge that we hold the agents and haulers we work with to the highest standards within our industry. Therefore, we do not envision a negative impact to shipment tracking because we do not mislead our customers. If an ETA or driver location is sought, we provide accurate information with a realistic timeline to when delivery will occur. If you do encounter an issue pertaining to AirTags, please reach out to the NFC Operations Department for assistance on domestic shipments and the International Division for overseas and Hawaii shipments.
