Message from the Principal
Dear DHS Staff, Students, and Families,

It might be April Fool's day, but it is no joke that next week we will start full-day, in-person learning. Please read below for some important FAQs:

MORNING BUILDING/CLASSROOM ENTRY
Students may enter their classroom up to 15 minutes prior to the first period of the day. Students who arrive at the building prior to that time MUST go to the student cafeteria. Students who arrive early for their early-bird science lab may not sit in the hallway to wait for their class to begin - please be sure to wait in the student cafeteria.

LUNCH DETAILS
Free, hot lunch will be available for all students (those choosing on or off-campus lunch) for pickup at lunch. These bagged lunches may be picked up at the back (east) lobby entrance, near the coffee bar, and at the main front entrance.

  • On-Campus - Students staying on-campus for lunch should go to the student cafeteria. Additional space will be available in the Exhibition gym, if necessary. Students should stay in their seat until at least 12:05 when classrooms will open for the next period of the day. (An exception would be for students who have an appointment to go to the ARC or testing center.) Currently, students wanting to eat outside, on-campus grounds, must ONLY use the area in the back of the school (adjacent to the east parking). Students may sit on the bleachers, grass, or pathways. Students must always be 6 feet apart while eating.
  • Off-Campus - Students may leave campus for lunch if they have been given parent/guardian permission. Please be careful leaving and arriving back on campus. Students must scan their ID to check-in when they return after lunch.

After lunch, classrooms will be open for students to enter starting at 12:05 p.m. After lunch, classes start promptly at 12:20 p.m.

STUDY HALLS
All free periods and off-lab periods have been replaced with study halls. Please review your schedule on Monday to review your study hall location. Students do NOT need to attend their study hall if that period is the first period of the day, right before or after lunch, or the last period of the day. In such instances, students may arrive late or leave early. However, please note, students will be assigned to do their COVID test during their study hall - see below.

COVID TESTING (starting next week):
Starting next week, students attending in-person should take their COVID test on Tuesday and Friday during their study hall period. Please note that up to 250 students will be testing every period, so please do not wait until the last minute to attend, since lines may be long. If a student does not have a study hall period, they should check IC for their assigned period (choice of 2 periods). Students may attend during that period or a passing period. Those individuals may also test during the first 30 minutes of the lunch period. All COVID testing periods (not times) will be listed in IC by Monday, April 5. Remote learners who attend extracurricular activities will be assigned to either a Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday schedule and may test any time between 3:20-5:00 p.m.

LOOKING AHEAD - WEEK OF APRIL 12-16:
Please know that JUNIORS are required to take the State Administered SAT on Tuesday, April 13. Juniors will receive additional details from Dr. Lilly Brandt, Assistant Principal in the coming days. Juniors WILL be able to park in the parking lot on that day. Details about bus transportation options will be shared by Dr. Brandt. As a result of the SAT, we have a slight modification for that week of school: Monday will be an IN-PERSON 78 day. Tuesday will be a no-school day, except for junior test takers. Wednesday-Friday will be regular cycle days.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

Sincerely,
Principal Kathryn Anderson

Congratulations to the cast and crew of the DHS Spring Musical, Bright Star! Bright Star is the story of one woman at two different points in her life: the first, when she is a wild young thing growing up barefoot and carefree in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina; the second, when she is a well-to-do magazine editor in Asheville, 22 years later.

We are proud of our students and staff who made this production possible!
