LSC successfully and safely hosts Integrated Manufacturing Open House
|
|
Lake Superior College hosted the Integrated Manufacturing Open House at the Downtown Center last Thursday. Several potential future IceHawks, (including Carson Brewster, a senior at Grand Rapids High School, who is featured in the WDIO story below) attended the COVID-19 modified Open House to tour the facility and learn about the programs LSC offers in this high-demand field. Check out the excellent media coverage on WDIO, KBJR6, CBS3 and Fox 21. We also did several radio interviews and ran digital ads prior the event to help promote the programs. Thank you to everyone involved in helping make this a safe and successful event, including our recruitment and marketing teams and faculty and staff at the downtown campus!

LSC Foundation awards $100,000 in Workforce Development Scholarships
|
|
The LSC Foundation has begun awarding $100,000 in Workforce Development (WFD) Scholarships to 40 deserving students in approved programs. This funding is primarily provided by Minnesota State and the State of Minnesota legislature, with matching funds provided by local community and industry partners and generous donors including LSC employees, Board members, alumni and other friends of LSC/LSC Foundation. Additional WFD scholarships are also in the works and will be announced early in Spring Semester. In addition to WFD scholarships, the LSC Foundation will again offer traditional scholarships in the spring, to be applied for Fall Semester 2021. That application window will open in March and be a very similar process to the past few years. To help contribute to scholarship funding, please visit the LSC Foundation's Donation Page. If you have any questions about scholarships or how to donate, please contact the Foundation at foundation@lsc.edu.
These scholarships really mean the world to our students, as we hear first-hand. Here's a perfect example: Tiffany is a returning nursing student at Lake Superior College. She's also a single mother of three, her disabled sister's caretaker and works nearly full-time. She asked if it was OK to remove her mask for a picture, because she wanted to make sure people saw how big she was smiling. She had tears in her eyes when she explained how much this was going to help her. She said she wasn't sure if she'd be able to afford to return to school in the spring since her hours had been reduced due to the economic impacts of COVID-19 (which unfortunately we're hearing a lot lately), but thanks to this scholarship she can and has now registered for the semester. Congrats, Tiffany! We look forward to seeing you back on campus in the spring. Her inspirational story is just one of many that we've been hearing, and we will be sharing more stories/pics on our social media pages.

Upcoming Events and
Campus Updates
-
The Tutoring and Learning Center is hosting "Fuel up for Finals" through Friday, December 18. Students can stop in for free coffee, snacks, tutoring and support. All are welcome, and students are also encouraged to connect with their favorite TLC tutors online. Please consider sharing this with your classes and promoting online and in-person support to the students with whom you work.
- Thank you to all who participated in the staff and faculty book clubs that read the book, "How to Be an Antiracist," by Ibram X Kendi. There were 22 participants between the two book clubs. Over the eight sessions the group discussed the importance of actively working to be antiracists, and they were enthusiastic in applying these tools here at LSC.

Heads Up: The LSC Bookstore will be closed to walk-in customers on Friday, December 18. Online orders can be placed at ww.lsc.edu/store. Please note that all PSEO students with existing books appointments should still attend their appointment with the store as scheduled.
As always, if you have any story ideas, pictures you'd like to share and/or info on upcoming events, please send them to marketing@lsc.edu so we can include them in the newsplash. Thanks!
